Custom File Types for Vista

Post by ivan »

Within my viewing panel I have a column called Type that shows what types of files I have.
Now the problem is that quite often such description is too long and with me having set columns to auto-adjust the width it can stretch things out quite a bit.
Examples, trying having a .doc and .msu files. What do you get? "Microsoft Office Word 97 - 2003 Document" and "Microsoft Update Standalone Package" respectively.
Yeah, I can kill the entire Type column, but that won't allow sorting by type. Sure, some of you may say "click to show the extension column". I can do but I already have extensions at the end of my filenames.

Since you pull such data from the registry then is there any chance of filtering it based upon certain set names? I would very much appreciate it, thank you.

open windows explorer

tools / folder options /

find .doc, .msu, etc etc

highlight extension click 'advanced' change the name from 'microsoft word document' to 'word' or 'doc' or whatever you want.

click ok, click close

You will need to close and re-open xyplorer to see the changes.

I am sure there are different ways to accomplish this but it works for me.

I know you used to be able to fiddle with stuff like that on XP but you can't do it the same way on Vista now.
