Dual Pane & Copy / Move functions

Post by Vulcan900 »

Hi, I am new to this forum and haven't fully explored XYplorer yet so if my ideas have been mentioned before, please excuse the repeat. I'd just like to say that if and when a dual pane version comes about, I would like to see the Copy and Move functions work on the file(s) selected so that the file is immediately copied or moved to the destination lister rather that having a dialog box open up to select the destination.
Thanks and looking forward to a dual pane version.
Regards

Greetings and welcome to the XY world/forums! Now given the size of this thread, I'm guessing even us old-timers may have repeated something, so if you did, given that you've been courteous in your initial post, we'd certainly understand.

And yes, I would also expect that the Copy/move would have the "other pane" as an easily selectable destination option as another product does...but a user may not want to have the other pane as destination in all cases, so having that as immediate default would not be a good idea, IMO.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

When I upgraded to the new forum software and decided to take the smilies from the old version I had to discover that the file names had been sightly altered between the versions. So, to feed the old icons into the new version I had to do some manual renaming: see which icon had what name to get the right names for the right icons. And, damn it, I wished I had a dual pane file manager at that point! First time this ever happened to me...

 and  ! See? I knew it would occur at some point! Welcome to the club! Maybe that little incident may help this cause?

Try xplorer²; it has dual panes, plus individual tabs for each pane.
Hope this helps!

haha -- you know, it was not that hard after all: opening 2 side-by-side XY instances took me about 10 seconds. :) Okay, for a once-in-5-years task.

See, this is your problem.
For you, it is a once-in-5-years task, because your job functions revolve around software development.
Now for a sys admin, something like this is not a once-in-5-years task.
This is not some free open source project where you can choose what you like to do and damn the rest; people PAY for this software, so you have an obligation to think about their interests as well, even if you aren't happy about it!!

Admit it, buddy; you thought you could deliver the best file manager without dual-pane, and you have been fighting that losing battle for years.
Microsoft went from dual to single to make it easier for the masses, but XY is not for the masses, it's for the pros.

This should have been a wake-up call for you; stop fooling around and make dual your number one priority!

Comrade Custer, you ask me to add a feature and at the same time diss me in my back?

No, impossible, that "Custer" can't be you, my friend! Somebody is using your name to spread bullshit about XYplorer. I thought you might like to know... :)

Well illustrated, Don!

It's true that labels are unnecessary when people make it so clear what their natures truly are. :)

I don't write a lot here but i use xyplorer daily. I support and recommend this software to many of my friends and co-workers, but even I agree that XYplorer lacking Dual-Pane capabilities is a total joke.

I bought a lifetime license time ago and i'm very glad i did it for the great service this app has provided me all this time. I'm currently doing some web-developing work for a local organization. Their IT department use Total Commander extensible and offered me to pay for a license of Total Commander for me (Of course i took the offer :) ).

Ben using it for the past days and still getting a grip of it, and oh boy, that DP makes a difference indeed.

Don't get me wrong here, i still like and promote XYplorer a lot, but also recognize that the DP capabilities for XYplorer can't wait any more.

i found a link 2 xyplorer on lifehacker;

nice tool but 1 thing missing: dualpane

scripting may be nice and all, but for 80pc of users there are other priorities

so just can say: dp - go4it ;-)

Hello all, i am Stefan and i am new here. (Please note that english isn't my mother language)

I chose this thread to post my first post because i like to use DP too

My first notion when i read your fine "Dual Pane Proposal" was that i
miss the since 'Norton Commander' typical keyboard shortcuts like
F5 Copy to other panel
F6 Move to other panel

I have seen that this mappings are already given... so will you at least
implement this options so user can assign the "right" ;-) shortcuts on there own,... if they care?

Hi and welcome to the XY forums! Don't worry about the English, since as you may guess, it's not Don's native lang either and that's very rarely an issue! And if we can't follow/understand something, we'll just ask ya, ok?

By saying that, I preume you're not familiar with CKS (Custom Keybd Shortcuts) as in http://www.xyplorer.com/tour/index.php?page=cks?

Thanks for the welcome.

My suggestion was not about how to assign an shortcut
but to implement the option to copy/move from one panel to the other
by using an internal command... (and then assign the "right" shortcut to this commands)

Perhaps using existing "Edit > Copy to" with pre-filled target panel?

Edit:
refilled = prefilled
