My List Of Wishes ;-)

Post by jacky »

Hi,

Okay so there always was a few things in my mind about TV3 that I'd love to see, so I though why let let the world know about them ;)
  • Remember "boxed branch" color per folder
Right now we can choose one color for all boxed branched folder, but i would love to see this becoming a per folder setting. The color in the Configuration would be the default one, but with a new "Folder Extra" or something lile that in the right-click menu on a folder, we could choose whether or not it is a favorite, boxed branched and/or hilited one. Plus, of course, which color to use for each of thoose for this specific folder! :D
  • remember panel status (hidden/shown) & size per tab
Once again atm it's for all of them, would be great if it could be a per tab thinggy, cause I have sometimes a tab wich a huge panel (previewing pictures, HTML files, etc) and others where I'd like to have a smaller (if any) panel. I know about (Shift+)F12 but still... 8)
  • Toolbar: a new tab button
Yes, Right-click/New Tab is too much for me :P BTW if we could choose which icons to have in it, cause I never used the cut/copy/etc ones so I could get rid of thoose
  • Creating new tab next to current one
Right now new tabs are always added in the end, I'd love to see them being added to the right of the current one. Mainly cause that's the way it works (for me at least) in my browser (Maxthon) and i always get confused for a sec in TV3 when I create a new tab.... (plus I like it better that way ;))
  • Closing tab with middle click
I think it's been discussed before, like opening one with a doucle-click, but I'm not sure how it ended so here it comes again ;)
  • History per-tab
Not very important, but if that can be done easilly, having the history (previous/next folder) remembered per tab would be cool :D Cause hitting previous while in the wrong tab can "mess up" at times.
And a few things about previewing videos. First, could there be a volume level somewhere? (might be good for audio files too) cause on my PC it's always very loud so I have to adjust it; and then get it back where it was.
Then, right-click is used to move in the video stream, and left-click is the play/pause one. One thing I'd like is if it's one pause, and I right-click somewhere, stay in pause! :D
And in the same idea, when looking for a preview-picture for a video, if the snapshot could work on real-size and not reduced one would be great (I don't really see the point of having a reduced snapshot anyways...)

There you go! 8)
And many thanks for this amazing software :D

Thanks for the wishes: No. 3, 4, and 5 have a theoretical chance... :)

I check that.

Technical reason: the "snapshot" is actually a screenshot; have your preview at 100% if you want 100% snapshots.

Not 1 & 2 ? I would have really loved thoose, esp. No. 1 cause right now I know some "special folders" of mine are "boxed", but being able to easilly tell which in which by the color would be so much better! :D

BTW I'm not sure if this can be done or not, but could there be a way (toolbar button) to make the treeview going back to the folder we're in the listview.
I mean, quite often I'm in a directory, I'm gonna move on the treeview, open some subfolders, etc just so I can get a name, do some drag&drop, whatever. And then I'd like for the treeview to get back to the folder I'm still in. Right now I have to search for it, or click on any folder & then hit back...

admin wrote:Technical reason: the "snapshot" is actually a screenshot; have your preview at 100% if you want 100% snapshots.
Okay, but then a preview at 100% isn't really a preview anymore right? :P
BTW about the volume thing, you think it could be done or not? Either a volume level in the panel, or in the configuration, cause right now it seems to be always at the maximum volume and I wish i could turn it down a little... 8)

One more thing ;) In the right click on the treeview, with the list of favorites folders, could there be like on top of that list be "Home" for the Home of the tab?

Thanks for all your work :D

Sure, but it's a touch too fancy for now. And: where would you select the color? You'd need a special interface just for this...

Yeah, I know the problem... I will find some solution.

I made a note. Use the knob on your speaker or the Windows sound control panel in the meantime.

F6 = Go home.

Well, as I said the color in the configuration would be the default one, but with a new item on the right click menu on the folder we would have a new window where to set each individiual colors for that folder.
Might not be obvious to everyone, but it would just be another of the many features of TV3 you found out & become addicted to when using it... ;)

I don't know what would be required in the source-code, but regarding the INI file in [HiliteBranch] just adding a Color.n=x would work I guess, if there's one then use it instead of ClrBoxed.... 8)

Thanks. :D Can't wait ;)

Yeah I know, but with it being in the menu it'd be better (for me) because right know I always right-click (used to, with fav folders) and realize "God I have to use my hand, I wanted to do it only with the mouse!! :P"
(yeah I know about the home button too, I just wanted it to be right there with all my fav folders )

Let's not be too fast with these things... I know you are in a feature rush now, but try to calm down a bit and let the dust settle. Maybe some other users plug in and have additional ideas or objections...

Can I hear some more opinions on this? And please suppress the "make it configurable" reflex... ok, checkboxes are cheaper and less limited than oil, but that does not mean one should spill them all over the place...

A clear disadvantage of add next to current is: you cannot add-add-add, and then close-close-close, to restore the initial state, because the selection after close is shifted to the next available tab (which is standard behavior for all deletions: focus the next, not the previous), and incidentally the next tab = the prev tab when the deleted tab is the last tab, so focus stays on the last tab after deleting the last tab, allowing to rewind the adding-chain. With add next to current we would have to focus the tab before the closed one to enable this rewinding. Got it?

Not really another opinion, but here we go... ;)
admin wrote:Well, my browser always adds in the end
bad browser, bad, bad browser! :P
admin wrote:because the selection after close is shifted to the next available tab (which is standard behavior for all deletions: focus the next, not the previous)
Actually () in my browser when I close a tab it's the previous one that got the focus 8) so yeah I think you're right, it should be changed to focus the previous tab, which also btw would be better for me 8)

It might be me, but I've always found it better/easier/more natural to work that way: when you add a tab it's added right next to where you are, and obviously when you close one you get back to the one before.
Also allows me to have some "order" in my tabs, like if I'm working on two different things, or in two different places, I can have one block of tabs on the left for the first, and the other one on the right for the second. If I need a new tab for the first thing, it will still be in its "group", not everything mixed up....

PS: why not make it configurable? ;)
No seriously, if it can be done I think people will always like it better when they can make the soft works how they want it to, and everybody is different/has different needs.
(i.e. in Maxthon I guess new tab at the end & focused, and when closing focusing the one to the right is the default behavior. But thank God I could change that! :D)

I think it would be confusing to add the new tabs next to the current tab instead of adding them always at the end, especially with the new tree context menu "open in new tab", don't you think?

Addiction is all I want!

In fact I was missing this feature for long because orientation in huge trees can get difficult and this coloring helps a lot. You could even give each of your drives its own background color...

And, apart from being highly addictive, this is another feature that no other file manager will ever have (because nobody is as crazy as me and writes a tree view from scratch 8) ).

Before upload, here are 2 questions to our english speaking users:

I added a new submenu to the tree's context menu called "Hilite" containing the new color options (I made the interface a bit flatter that jacky's suggestion). Or should I call it "Mark"?? (since it also contains Toggle Favorite Folder) Or how?

Is the spelling "hilite" too informal or slangy for a menu caption?? Should I better use "highlight"? I found that "hilite" is far less common in google...

To me the word "hilite" is definitely too slangy...always thought it was. But that's just me, I don't know what everyone else thinks.

Thanks for all your hard work!

Thanks, that's a clear statement! And since I had some good time once in Omaha, Nebraska, (and the best icecream of my whole life!) I will follow you here.

Sorry, I didn't intend that to be so harsh. It's really not a big deal, otherwise I would have brought it up earlier, but since you asked...

I've been living in Omaha for just over 4 years now and I haven't found all the good places yet, where did you get the ice cream!!??? Next time you're in Omaha stop by and we'll go get some.

Harsh? Why harsh? Is "clear statement" somehow implying harshness? I meant that completely non-ironic, so there's no reason to say sorry :)

That was 5 years ago in front of that big old brownstone building ("old market", or so???); it tasted like chocolate cookies drowned in frozen cake.

Sure, here we go: I am quite new to TV3, so I'm not yet "used" to anything. So I'm only used to the behaviour in my browser (Opera), which is to open the tabs at the end (well the default behavious anyway, can be set to open new next to current). Also I can't recall any browser that opens next to current [by default]. I once turned "open next to current" on in opera and it confused the hell out of me, so please don't change it :)
