Not bug but suggestion related: On the "Applied Sections" panel, maybe add a "(xxx, yyy, ...)" style addendum to first item "Views" that gives a better clue as to what is meant by "View" as used here given the slightly generic nature of the term...there's plenty of room for a few words.

I'm also thinking that having the toolbar icon toggle to a "remove' may be just a bit hazardous given the potential for an accidental mis-click...disabling it is one thing, but if it actually removes it, that might be better kept as menu option which is less subject to mis-clicks...ok, so one has to actually "save the DAT" to effect change, but just an idea.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

1. I had that before and removed it into the tooltip. I'll put it back...
2. You get a warning prompt whenever a non-specific FV is concerned. Otherwise another click on the button will quickly put it back into live (and update it to the current state of view -- okay, that might not be wanted). I find it important for the work-flow to have no prompts here for simple "really folder-specific" FVs, but just a smooth on/off switch.

I have done a bit more testing and a new clean FVS and still have a problem - any ideas?

I have set folders which I want to display as thumbnails with FVS set to C:\*Images\ with sub folders ticked and it only shows the main folder of this type with thumbnails - sub folders display as default.

After editing to C:\*Images*\ the sub folders display as thumbnails as expected

FVS code initially - sub folders do not work

XYplorer Folder View Settings

Code: Select all

 XYplorer Folder View Settings
C:\*Images\
Name.110,Ext.41,Size.73,Type.93,Created.69,Modified.72,Accessed.77,Attr.60,Len.28,
111011100
<default>
Name.198,Ext.41,Size.48,Type.93,Created.69,Modified.72,Accessed.77,Attr.60,Len.28,
111011100
FVS after edit code sub folders now work

Code: Select all

 XYplorer Folder View Settings
C:\*Images*\
Name.110,Ext.41,Size.73,Type.93,Created.69,Modified.72,Accessed.77,Attr.60,Len.28,
111011100
<default>
Name.198,Ext.41,Size.48,Type.93,Created.69,Modified.72,Accessed.77,Attr.60,Len.28,
111011100

 I didn't see the tooltip that was there as the other ones didn't need/have any, but still think it would be better to just add "List, Details, Thumbnails, ..." to the visible option given all the gray space available.

Oh...didn't realize about the non-specific prompt...anyway, given that one can pretty quickly access the 'Remove' via that TB context menu, that's why I suggesting that TB just toggle current active status for this folder but not actually remove it...which would still be an on/off, just not as potentially permanent.

It is indeed a bug! When you use a wildcard pattern as folder specification the Include Subfolders flag is ignored. Fix is coming.

Back to terminology!

I'm now almost done with all code and GUI stuff related to "Folder View Settings" (absolutely fantastic feature!) and I got quite used to using the term "Folder View" in captions like "Save Folder View", "Manage Folder Views" etc. ... and I'm starting to wonder why the whole thing is called "Folder View Settings"! I would find "Custom Folder Views" much more natural!
However, when googling for "Custom Folder Views" one gets only a few hits. Why is that so? Anything wrong with this name? It might be my lack of English but I find "Folder View Settings" clearly worse...

There's even a topic here in the forum called "Custom Folder Views":
http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?t=1975
And there was a time when I called this feature "Custom Folder Views" myself. See also here for an older name discussion: http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic. ... 8062#18062
"Folder Specific Settings" was preferred then (by me, too) but I now my vote goes to "Custom Folder Views".

What about you?

 What?

Ok, I don't know why CFV is so unused, but...it seems to be, and that's why I think it's a bad choice! Remember that the target audience for XY is someone who wants/needs to convert to another product, so using terms that are common to competing products makes it much easier to do so...if I'm switching products, I don't wish/want/prefer to have to learn a new set of terms so I'd look for one that uses verbiage that I'm used to. And I suspect new visitors to this forum would also be looking for info based on what they were used to.

Now it's given that this term is not used all that much, mostly in titles and such, so I don't think using the common terminology is that bad! It's not your English skills, because CFV is perfectly fine to me...
It's not because I may have suggested FVS, but just because of it's frequency of usage in the "industry" that makes it the best, IMO.

So obviously, my vote is to keep it FVS...now you could still use CFV in some descriptions like on web site and such without any conflict, but with a lower-case "C"...ok? 8)

I think you are right in that the name needs to be better than FVS and so I think User Folder Views is better as this identifies the feature more explicitly. This also then begs the question should the feature be under menu User as Manage Folder Views. Personally, I prefer that to being under the menu view as this menu already has a lot of items.

:) Yes, from a marketing POV the decision is clear. I just would like to know why CFV did not make it...

Other question concerning menu captions: Instead of "Remove" (which I never really liked in this context) wouldn't "Clear" be a better term!?

Okay, I read about "Folder View Settings" to find out about any obscure idea behind this construction that might be hidden from a non-english speaker. Result: I can live with "Folder View Settings" as title of the feature since it commonly aquired the meaning of what really should be called "Folder Specific Settings" or "Custom Folder Views"...

... but: "Enable Folder View Settings" is a bullshit caption IMO (because, of course, Folder View Settings are always enabled in any file manager)! It really should be called "Enable Custom Folder Views" if there's any sense in captions! Also the title of the submenu should be "Custom Folder Views" because the whole View menu is about Folder View Settings, of course!

The User menu is only for UDCs. Also "User Folder Views" is ambiguous to me.

Quite frankly ever since you all agreed to drop Folder Specific Settings you've no longer been using a name that accurately describes the feature.

Folder Specific Settings implies in name that you can define settings on a per folder basis.

Folder View Settings sounds more like it's just describing all of the various ways you can change the view, but not that they can be remembered for certain folders.

Custom or User Folder View says you can create a custom view for a folder aside from the details, list, thumbnails, etc.

I can relate to this and agree.

Let's forget marketing for a while and find a god work for it. (Folder Specific Settings does not work for reasons described earlier in this thread). What about "Folder Specific Views"?

Yes I can accept that - whilst I think it is best to get a good name representative of the feature as has been demonstrated it is probably impossible to get a prefect name - once backed up by the wiki and help the use and terminology will fit even if not ideal.

Reminds me of committee meetings where nothing gets decided!

Except Views are Details, Thumb, List, etc (and this is more than just that.)
TheQwerty wrote:Custom or User Folder View says you can create a custom view for a folder aside from the details, list, thumbnails, etc.
Cause you're going with Folder Views = Views. If if were to say that a "folder view" is a combination of View (which usually doesn't relate to a folder (but a tab) so there's no reason to call it folder view), sort order, columns order/visibility, etc

Then, "Custom Folder Views" works. At least I feel that way...

I don't really agree. I think remove (or simply delete, though it needs to be "Delete (C)FV" then to avoid confusion) works better. Because clear implies we're not removing it, just clearing/resetting all values, but it will still exists; while in reality here, the CFV is gone, and we're back to using the other CFV that matches/the default FV/no FV.
