No ellipsis (...) when long filename truncated in thumbnail view

Post by o7blue »

XYplorer 27.20.1500 32bit
Windows 10
Screen Scaling 100%

Updated from v26->v27 and I noticed that the ellipsis (...) is now missing from thumbnail view when a long filename is truncated.
File names in screenshots are just "abcde 12345" repeating.

Thumbnail View (no ellipsis):

Details View (ellipsis is present):

This is probably an edge case. Ellipsis are generally showing for cropped multiline thumbnail captions.

Try if ticking this helps:
Configuration | Colors and Styles | Styles | Columns | Truncate filenames in the middle

Truncating in the middle makes it even less readable since the ellipsis is still missing in thumbnail view.

File names:
0001 abc 123 def 456.txt
0002 abc 123 def 456 ghi.txt
0003 000 abc 123 def 456 ghi 789.txt

In thumbnails view for last item the 'def' gets truncated with no ellipsis indication:

Works fine in details view:
Clipboard-20260830-01.png
Also fine in tile view:
Clipboard-20260830-02.png
It's just the thumbnail view that's having issues, and it happens for any thumbnail size.

Do you see the same with a fresh instance?

I was able to replicate this in a fresh instance, and it looks to be caused by the font alone.
Not even the size of the font, just the font I'm using (JetBrains Mono NL).

Default font:
Clipboard-20260831.png
JetBrains Mono NL 14pt
Clipboard-20260831-01.png
JetBrains Mono NL 9pt
Clipboard-20260831-02.png
JetBrains mono should be easy to get if you need it for debugging.
I don't remember where I got it from, but here it is on google fonts: https://fonts.google.com/specimen/JetBrains+Mono

Can't see JetBrains Mono "NL" anywhere. Which of these fonts is it?

NL stands for 'No Ligatures', and I think it's part of the standard font. But it happens on the normal version of the font too, so just use that.

Filename: 11111 22222 33333 44444 55555 66666 77777 88888 99999 00000 11111 22222 33333 44444.txt
Standard JetBrains Mono 9pt:

Yep, I see it. The font has a problem with multiline text when it's cropped. If you set Configuration | Preview | Thumbnails | Caption lines to 1, the ellipses come back.

I don't think I can fix that. It's the font.

Hm, but it worked ok before? This is definitely a regression, I've been using this font for 3 years at least.

I've got my old 25.90 installer, do you want me to downgrade and show it working?

You are sure it worked in 25.90? (I got all installers)

I'm 100% certain it worked fine on the latest version as of 2024/08/22 (which is when you patched an issue I was having and I updated via the update button, so I don't have an installer for that).
Next, I am highly certain it worked on some version of v26, because that's what I updated from (but did not think to take note of the details at the time).
I would say I haven't updated xy in about a year or so, but I have been using the same settings (JetBrains Mono + 2 caption lines for thumbnails) for at least 3 years, and obviously it was working before, otherwise I'd post about it sooner.

There's only one reason I'm not keen on downgrading to my 25.90 installer- it has a bug that affected me which you fixed in a followup release.

Is there a way for me downgrade to an arbitrary previous version? Something like 26.70, or 26.80? I don't remember which one I was on before the update, but I guarantee you it worked without the issue we're discussing here. Losing the multi-line is a dealbreaker for me to be honest.

Thank you, fingers crossed you'll be able to find the cause of this regression.
In the future I'll be sure to keep better track of the version I'm upgrading from. I'm a bit angry at myself for not taking a screenshot of the "updated from a->b version" that xy prints on top of the window when you update. That would have helped in this situation.

Thank you very much! I definitely did not expect this quick of a turnaround
I updated to the 64bit version since the 32bit beta didn't have the fix yet, and can confirm the ellipsis is showing up properly now!

One question about the 64bit version, is it normal to NOT be able to right click (and have the context menu show) when selecting all search results?
That is File Search->Results from many subfolders->Select All. On the 32 bit version I was able to right click and select copy everything to the other pane. On the 64 bit version the context menu doesn't appear. Not sure if that's a bug or just a feature that isn't in the 64bit version yet. Dragging the items to the other pane does work (though a bit sluggish when there are thousands of items, so right clicking them was more convenient).
