Show menu bar behaviour change

Post by bobfleming »

Hi. Just upgraded to 28.30.0701 and noticed a change in the behaviour of the Show menu bar (hamburger) toolbar button.

Previously the button would toggle the display of what I would call the 'regular' app menu. I use dark mode so it was handy for me to be able to disable the app menu, which insisted on displaying in light mode (black text on a white background, shown in the screenshot).

Now this menu is displayed all the time, and the element that gets toggled is a new (at least to me) dark mode menu with a smaller font. Also in the screenshot.

Can someone please explain what's going on? I'm fine with the new dark mode menu if it's a replacement for the old one, but I could do with increasing the font size, and don't need two of the same menu bars visible!

Ctrl+Wheel over the toolbar to modify the font size.

To remove the old ("Classic") menu, read the release notes v28.30.0701. Come back here if you still need help.

Thanks, but I'm unable to find any info on 28.30.0701 specifically in the change log. Would you mind pointing me to the right place?

@admin - Given the somewhat amusing comment in the release notes:
This is because menus are seen as old-fashioned, or even completely outdated, by younger users.
it got me thinking: is there a way to run a command without enabling the menu display, or having a keyboard shortcut? E.g. in some apps there is a shortcut like Ctrl-P which allows you to search for a command by name and execute it from some kind of popup window. Currently the way I check for new versions is:
  • Toggle the menu display on
  • Help / Online support / Check for updates
  • Toggle the menu display off
Just wondering if there was another way. (And I'm now thinking I really ought to create a shortcut key regardless).

Sure, just assign a keyboard shortcut to it.

You can also run commands directly from Help | List All Commands... (Ctrl+F1)
