Turning off any monitor creates minimized taskbar icon for XYplorer (from system tray only)

Post by elqasar2 »

I have XYplorer always running in the background in the system tray when its window is closed ('Minimize to tray on X close'). Since some very recent version of XYplorer (32-bit) I notice that whenever I turn off any of my 2 monitors (both connected by DisplayPort), XYplorer becomes active in a minimized state on the taskbar (as if I'd clicked on the system tray icon and then minimized the XYplorer window to the taskbar). Previously I could turn off my monitors and XYplorer would stay in the system tray only.

Not sure if it's a XYplorer bug, or a bug in a recent Windows update, or a bug in the latest NVIDIA drivers (the last two versions of which have a known bug which shows the NVIDIA Settings tray icon all the time, even when configured to not show it).

Nothing was changed here in a long time.

I think my hunch about the NVIDIA display drivers being a possible culprit was correct. I've just installed their latest hotfix driver (591.67) which fixes a system tray bug they introduced on 4 December, and after testing turning off my monitors now, XYplorer stays in the tray only, as expected.

I spoke too soon. Issue is back. What a strange issue. Oh well, every time I come back to my PC and turn the monitors back on, XYplorer will be active on the taskbar again. If nothing in XYplorer changed, maybe it's a Windows 11 bug. How bizarre. :veryconfused:

I suspect the changes below may have something to do with it. For now, I've tried downgrading to v27.20.0300 (i.e. the version before any of those changes were made) and then tested turning off each of my monitors 3 times, and so far the problem has not occurred. When turning off monitors connected via DisplayPort, Windows 11 has some logic to determine what open windows should move to what display. So I think that with v27.20.0700, something is getting confused. Note that I have many apps that run in the system tray, and this problem where an unexpected taskbar icon appears is only occurring with XYplorer.

Code: Select all

v27.20.0302 - 2025-11-13 13:30
! Multiple Monitors: Crash when dropping to PowerToys FancyZones across monitors. Fixed.

v27.20.0607 - 2025-11-25 14:13
    * Icon on Taskbar: The automatic taskbar refresh, i.e., moving the app icon to the
taskbar of the new monitor when the app is dragged to it, is back. This feature was
temporarily removed to fix the PowerToys FancyZones crash.

What value do you have in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\MMTaskbarMode?

Thanks, so far so good with 27.20.0711, after just a single test of turning each monitor off. But I'll keep an eye on the situation over the next few days, through a few cycles of turning monitors off, putting PC to sleep, etc. and let you know if I spot the issue again.
