XYplorer not responding

Post by elmonty »

XYplorer 64-bit 28.00.0500 Windows 11

I started the app up this morning and it just froze for about 3 minutes. The title bar had "(not responding)."

After a few minutes, it came back. If it's any help, the preview pane was open when it started.

I have experienced XY 64 not responding many times since Win 11 25H2 went on and finally a repair-install of Windows has fixed it.

SFC /scannow clean and dism didn't do anything noticeable. The problem was a little evident in Explorer too, but not at the chaotic interminable hangs and crashes XY displayed. Then poof, all gone!

A repair install is a scary looking but remarkably simple process. You get the ~7Gb file from Microsoft (media creation tool) and put it on a USB or DVD. Then, in Windows, close everything bar XY and run setup. About 3 hours later (depending how attentive you were to the license agreement prompts) you have a fully functioning PC again, and XY even opens up all the tabs just how you had them. No negative consequences, or even annoying rework, needed to be handled. It looks like a nuclear option but it is a puppy, and not the first time I have needed to go get it.

One very important 'trap' is you MUST download the MS version for the actual installed language and that is not what you have set as the language. If in doubt, get the US English version as getting the International English version will likely end in tears (a message saying we cannot keep your apps, or worse - I forget now as it is a while since I made that mistake!).

What was the root cause that needed this kind of treatment? Wish I knew, but this is a danged fast PC and turning file handling into molasses and 10Gbpps ethernet into a carrier pigeon is just not cricket!

For anyone else contemplating the repair-install solution, remapping the network drives over themselves seems to be a necessary extra step.

Gotta say I have been so impressed how much stuff the r-i fixed, on a 6 months since new built PC with a W10 to 11 upgrade as soon as the build was stable.

'Weird stuff' did start happening with XY and network maps, but not if the network was addressed directly (ie server name). So I re-mapped all the network drives over the top of themselves and now all ticketty-boo.

SFC /scannow was taking around an hour to tell me nothing was wrong. Now it is back to under a minute. On a 4TB T705 DDR5 SSD, I should think so! But what a crappy world to be hacking out a life as a dev when nothing is replicable due to Redmond Rubbishmangling, yet the problems are real for the users who are stuck with belief suspension. All power to ya Don :D !

PS, still got those 1/3 height previews for Solidworks (now 2026) files, if you were looking for something to do in an idle moment...?
