list details name ext option

Post by graham »

In the list detail column headings can there be name with extension (as now) plus name without extension since ext can be set as a separate heading.

As far as I know, this is not possible right now. I had a similar request two years back but have forgotten why i needed it. I am curious to know why you need files without extension. Maybe that will reignite my initial request.

The reason is just a cosmetic one really.

If one selects Ext as a header to get all extensions aligned or for sorting to display in a separate column then it seems unnecessary to have in the name column the extension as well and taking up valuable display space.

The Ext column exists for the purpose of sorting by extension. Showing names without extension would not have any purpose I'm aware of. Yes, screenspace would be saved, and redundancy reduced, but at a very high price: showing the file name base without extension is hiding super-important info from its natural place. I don't want to look at another column to check the extension.

Except for making some users happy.

While I agree with you, given that one can, in Win Expl, set it to "Hide extensions of known types", this would be a variant of that...and though most of us wouldn't want to look elsewhere, it's obvious that some folks do, and under the right circumstances, I even might also.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

I am convinced by Don's reply and I sure would not want to copy Win Expl. No, Don is right, the name is important and should show in full.

Well, if we're trying to get people to abandon WE, then (IMHO) we need to make them feel "at home", ok?
And the full name does show...just that it's thus split into two parts...which, it appears, for some users, makes it easier for them to work with it, and so if the ability is added even "behind the scenes", then everyone can be happy! 8)

After all, there are already a number of options that I would never ever use and can't understand why someone would use them, but that's what makes XY so great: You can tailor it to your liking!

I would very much like to see the ability to hide extension from files. I already have a column with the type so personally having it on the end is redundant to me.

Like j_c_hallgren said, that's exactly what makes XYplorer great! 8)

Would you be ok with my idea from other thread that ext in name couldn't be hidden unless either ext or type col was currently visible/shown? It's more complicated that way but it would force user to always see the 'complete picture' via some method.

If I understand what you're asking correctly (correct me if I don't), then you're asking if I'd be OK with not being able to hide the extension unless Type column is shown/visible, right? My answer would be "yes" because I always have the Type column shown.

Yes, your understanding is correct...I was saying that either Type or Ext col would have to be shown in order to hide ext from name.

Have no idea if this would make it more acceptable by Don or make it less, but it's just a way to potentially handle the issue.

If I were the kind who liked hiding extension, a simple tweak would suffice. my 2 cents.

It'd be just fine with me also...A Config opt isn't required, IMO...but maybe it'd not be fully active unless conditions met as I proposed?

A tweak that a user is able to do within XY or only Don can do this tweak?
