XYplorer64 TB v29.90.0020 - Strange Temporary File Appears on Desktop When Launching Files via XYplorer64 TB

Post by spinear »

Whenever I launch a file by clicking (regardless of the application), a strange file with random characters briefly appears on the desktop and then disappears.

I noticed this behavior through the Windows 11 Start Menu, where the recently launched items show something unusual.
At first, I didn’t know why this file was appearing and thought it might be malware, but I later confirmed that it shows up every time I launch an app by clicking a file in XYplorer.

I'm currently using single-click to open files. I’ve carried over the exact settings I used in the 32-bit version.

Weird. Does it also happen with a fresh* instance?

* Type fresh; into the Address Bar and press Enter. A new instance of XYplorer will open on top of your current instance. Note that your current configuration will not be overwritten by the "fresh" instance.

Yes. Even when I run it as a fresh instance, the same issue occurs.

Additionally, as shown in the video, the start menu also behaves abnormally.
While it's flickering like this, nothing appears in the Home tab of my Windows Explorer.

The flickering below happened just now when I tested with a fresh instance, but it was the same yesterday with the one I normally use. I didn’t know what was happening at the time.

So, in a fresh instance, when you launch a TXT file by double-clicking it in the list, this happens?

yep. txt, jpg, mp4, glb, fbx, this kind of stuff.
It doesn't necessarily have to be a default Windows app, but those are the fastest. I tested it by repeatedly opening a JPG file with the Windows 11 Photos app.

This is totally crazy. Can you see the size of that phantom file? Or maybe even the contents?

It seems like the file gets deleted immediately after it's created. Since the Start menu only shows history, I assume it just means that a file with special characters was accessed. When I click on the file from that list, the taskbar itself freezes. I'm not sure if it's freezing because the file can't be found, or because of the special characters in the filename.

I simulated your setup but couldn't reproduce the issue, of course. I have no idea what's going on, but it appears to be specific to your system.

So it's just another Win11 bug and has nothing to do with XY.

It doesn’t matter whether XYplorer is running or not. Once this issue occurs, it persists until I reboot the system.
Another user replied exact same issue while using the 64-bit version, which further supports the idea that it’s related to the XY.
I’ve been using the 32-bit version for a long time, and I still have it installed. When I switch back to the 32-bit version, the issue never happens.

The problem occurs immediately after launching the 64-bit version and opening a file. I don’t know the exact cause, but it seems to be something is reacting to the 64-bit version of XY.

Since dev can't reproduce the issue, I'll tell you again if I find it.

I get a fix (thanks ChatGPT) :

- goto %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent and delete all files
- goto %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations and delete all files
- goto %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations and delete all files

Oh yeah, that helped!

Should be fixed in the next beta. It was an XY bug! :bug:
