Software randomly hangs when accessing a network folder

Post by SAW »

Sometimes when I click on a network folder XYPlorer just hangs there and the menu bar turns white like the application stops responding for a time. Eventually it recovers and displays the contents of the folder.

This problem just randomly happens from time to time, but yet if I use Windows Explorer to access that same network folder at the same time that XYPLorer is hung, I find that Windows Explorer can immediately access this folder with no delay at all.

This happens to me every day and I have consistently found that Windows Explorer never has this delay so I figure XYPlorer must be trying to do something that is causing this added delay, but I have no idea what it is. Once it acceses this folder I can switch to another folder and back again with no delay the second time.

Anyone have an idea why this happens?

Hi and welcome to XY forums,

Maybe you have to tweak some options, like mentioned in one of XYwiki's FAQ:

It Seems XYplorer Browses Slower (On Network) Than Other File Managers, What Can I Do To Make It Faster ?

Hope that helps.

It seems like most of the settings I already had turned off, however there were a couple I changed.

The toggle for "check existence of subfolders in tree" was on, but the sub toggle for "in network locations as well" was off. I now turned off the first toggle and it seems like that has resolved my problem.

The network folders I was having the issue with were mapped network drives, but I wonder if XYplorer was still trying to calculate them as if they were a local drive.

I also switched to using generic icons for network locations.

Thanks for the help.

I am glad that helped.
But I am not sure if XY is treating mapped drives as local drives. Atleast your case suggests that it does and Don (Admin) should take notice of this and correct it.

No, mapped drives are treated as network drives in this respect.

This setting has considerable effect if a folder has a lot of items in it but no folders among them.

However, the change you made should not have any effect on a network/mapped folder. Are you sure that this made the difference??

Well at this point I'm not too sure of anything anymore. Usually I had this problem every day. This morning I changed those settings and did not notice the issue all day long. So now I changed the settings back to what I had before when I was having the problem and so far I have not been able to repeat the problem.

So maybe changing those settings really did not have any effect and I'm just having a good day where the hanging problem doesn't occur.

Now I have done more testing with those settings on and with them off and either way I am still suffering from this same performance problem at random times.

So I think whatever is causing the problem is not related to those settings. Anyone have any other ideas?
