XYplorer as a file dialog window in Windows apps ...

Post by Omnimaxus »

Hi to everyone. Bought a lifetime license for XYplorer earlier today. Great program - but just one thing. Actually, two. One is a question/issue. Two is a piece of feedback for the developer(s). Let's start with number one. My question is, for example, when I save a file in Vivaldi or whatever, it's not XYplorer that shows up. It's the File Explorer file dialog window. How do I make it so that XYplorer shows up, and not File Explorer? I thought XYPlorer was a full replacement for File Explorer ... ? Can someone please help? Number two, there are a lot of configuration options. Maybe too many. Ha. But I would respectfully recommend that the developer(s) rephrase or re-write certain things so they're more clear and actually get at what they're supposed to do.

For example, I didn't figure out until a bit later (and after some searching online) that the way to get XYplorer to show the main path selected by users (for when the program starts up) each and every time without any changes or inconsistency in folder appearance and whatnot was to simply uncheck the "save settings on exit" setting. So I figured I had to leave that option alone at the beginning and make any and all changes I wanted before exiting the program (in effect, saving the settings made) and re-entering it to uncheck it to leave everything the way I wanted them to be each and every time. That wasn't clear. So, again, perhaps a re-assessment of the configuration screen and options is in order ... ? Thanks. Hoping someone can help with my original question here.

Welcome to XY!

1. The open / save dialogs are independent of the file explorer you use and thus still owned by Windows hence look like Windows Explorer.

2. By not saving changes you will also lose all the changes you do in the settings that are not necessarily visible.
You should rather delve into things like Folder View Settings (FVS), Tabsets, Locked Tabs, Startup.ini, Permanent Startup Path or maybe even the Session Manager script from the script forum to have your XY look the same all the time while still having the ability to retain global changes to your settings by allowing XY to save changes on exit.
Regular backups also help to get back to a known status in case you "muck" up something completely.

Welcome!

I doubt that that is possible (as RalphM wrote above). But there is a nice solution... Have you considered the free application "Listary"? I am using an ancient version of it (5.00.2843 portable, possibly still available on their site), but it is great. Usage (no need to use search functions): Start Listary (runs in background). Then, when saving/opening a file from another application, with (windows) save/open dialog opened, switch to XYplorer and position to a target directory. Switch back to the previously opened save/open dialogue. And there you are, positioned where you wanted to be. https://www.listary.com/

XYplorer is a mighty tool. You invested money, but now you have to invest time. Hovering over settings and exploring manual here and there are good ideas (besides all that RalphM wrote, of course). Be assured that every minute spent will pay back and prolong your life, so to speak.

Thanks for mentioning the manual. After reading your response, I went and found it online.

900 pages?! Haha. Well, I'll look at it and "RTFM," as they used to say a lot back in the day.

Thanks; I will take a look at the manual I just retrieved online and will also give these things you mentioned another look.

If you're looking to have XY always show the same folder on its launch, Configuration > General > Startup & Exit > Permanent startup path. You can then lock that tab so you can't browse away from it and everything else will open in a new tab. Right-click on the tab you want to lock and select Lock Location. You do this for any number of tabs should you find yourself constantly opening the same tabs.

Right; I get that. I understand. But what I really was getting at was not coming back to the same arrangement of folders between sessions. What I'd like to do is come back to Xyplorer with a "clean slate" every time I open it. Not only do I want to start up the file manager at the same location (e.g., "This PC" every time), but I also want a clean look instead of a cluttered mess. For example, if I muck about in Xyplorer with folders and such like from browsing through them or whatever, I don't want them to look the same or be messed up when opening Xyplorer again. I'd rather that the folder tree looks "clean" again and not cluttered. Does this help?

I hope I've explained myself a little more clearly. Thanks!

Disable this (and then save settings manually at least once):

Configuration | General | Tree and List | Tree | [ ] Remember state of tree

and if you do decide to enable saving settings automatically, you can disable the same Tabs opening again next time in this dialog:

Configuration | General | Startup & Exit | Save Settings | Apply to... >> Tabs

Thank you; this is helpful. (And thank you to whoever keeps approving my posts since I'm "new" here.)
