Click an .xlsx file causes problems
Hi XYPlorer,
Something recently happened to my XYPlorer related to Excel .xlsx files. When I click that file type, a Microsoft .NET Framework warning pops up and I then cannot do other file actions like delete or drag-n-drop, and the Preview pane is screwed-up. The warning message is attached.
I don't really need to preview office files other than PDFs, so maybe there's a setting to ignore them if they are problematic, but I didn't find that in configuration.
Thanks for any suggestions to try!
Regards, Kevin

Re: Click an .xlsx file causes problems
Hello Highend,
Thanks for your quick reply, I did as you suggested but the same situation persists, unfortunately. I should have seen that in configuration and tried before, but anyway it must be something deeper.
I closed-out XY in task manager and tested it again, XY works perfectly as usual until I click an .xlxs file. I can click a Word.docx file and no problem arises, it previews as it should, I can do file operations and preview works for the other file types.
I'm running version 26.90.0100 and latest updates to Windows 11. This could have started around the time of the last Windows update, 13 February but I didn't worry about it then, figured it was something with that .xlsx file.
Not a crisis for me just more of a nuisance, thanks for your assistance and ready to try anything else that you suggest.

Re: Click an .xlsx file causes problems
Use the find button in the upper right side of that config section and search for xlsx.
Does it appear anywhere else?
Does the same problem appear with a fresh instance?
Does Windows Explorer show the correct preview for that file?
Hide the preview window, select the .xlsx file.
Execute this from the address bar:
Output?

Re: Click an .xlsx file causes problems
Morning Highend,
It seems this morning that your suggestion works, XY ignores the preview of .xlsx files and functions normally. I could have made an error last night when de-selecting .xlsx from preview, this morning I looked again at Config and it was checked, so I might have un-checked a different xl format. Sorry if I did, my eyers were tired!
I did continue with your trouble-shooting notes with results as follows:
1. .XLSX appears only in that list of files to preview, search didn't show it anywhere else in Config.
2. Basically, the same situation with a new instance of XY. Specifically, when it opens without the preview windows, I can select the .xlsx but cannot do anything with it or with other files, and at this point there is still no error message. When I activate/show the Preview pane is when the ,Net Framework error appears.
3. When the error message dialog appears, I select Continue on it, and then I just notice a tiny window (without title) in the upper-left corner of my primary monitor. Simply shows the file path of the .xlsx [C:\Users\kevin\Downloads\XLSX Folder\xxx.xlsx] and a Close button.
3. Windows Explorer -- Interesting mix of symptoms here, it does not show a preview of .xlsx files but other formats yes, including a Word.docx file. Preview is at full resolution too, not like an expanded thumbnail as in XY, and I can also perform normal file operations in Explorer.
4. I closed out XY and any instances in task manager, opened without preview, and ran the script:
text extracttext();
Failed to load an IFilter. Error 80004005
When I select Continue, an XY window appears with blank white space, but I can't enter anything into it.
5. After the .Net message appears and I select continue, then I close out XY in the usual manner, but the process is still shown in Task Manager, and as many processes as XY instances with the Preview error, it seems. However, with Preview .xlsx de-selected in Config, closing out XY does not leave a process running.
So for me now that .xlsx is not previewing, XY is performing well for me, so not a crisis fortunately. I'll continue with your t-shooting suggestions as maybe others will run into this issue. XY is essential to my work and I've got plenty to keep me busy with, so thanks very much for your assistance to keep it going for me!
Best Regards and standing by,
Kevin

Re: Click an .xlsx file causes problems
This happens for all .xlxs files, not only for a specific one, right?
The iFilter for xls, xlxs is broken...
You could disable it completely with:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html
That could restore the file management capabilities of XY for those files.
In the end: I'd suggest to do a restore point, uninstall MS Office and reinstall it.

Re: Click an .xlsx file causes problems
Hello Highend,
Thanks for your quick reply!
Yes, I've tried a variety of .xlsx files and all show the same situation.
I think for now being so busy I'll leave it as is, anyway previewing a spreadsheet is not so beneficial with lots of small text in cells, I ended up opening them fully to read anything. The few spreadsheets that I work with are big expansive things that don't show well in the preview.
Actually, with .xlsx not previewing, I can do XY file operations on that file type as usual, so in effect the issue is resolved from a usability viewpoint.
So thanks very much for your quick assistance, I'm in good shape now to work with XY.
Best Regards, Kevin

Again, one of those things that just goes away with the 64-bit edition. No more .NET, hooray!

Re: Click an .xlsx file causes problems
Guten Morgen Admin,
Thanks for jumping in and now I am puzzled because I thought that I was using the 64-bit version, but maybe I'm not. When I look at Task Manager >> Details I see XYplorer.exe with Architecture x86, so that's the 32-bit version running, right?
My Windows 11 is 64-bit and when new I installed XY version 25.80, but I cannot remember and perhaps I selected to download a 32-bit install version.
Maybe I should uninstall it and start with a clean version, I could save my toolbar and folder configurations I suppose in File >> Save Settings.
Thanks for your assistance Admin!

Re: Click an .xlsx file causes problems
There is no 64-bit version of XY atm. One of the reasons of the switch to twinBasic...

Re: Click an .xlsx file causes problems
No, currently only a 32-bit version is available. However, it may happen that only 64-bit preview handlers are installed on a system for certain file types. For these cases, a 64-bit helper application (XY64.exe) written in .NET is used. Soon, however, XYplorer.exe itself will be 64-bit and the helper application will no longer be needed.

Re: Click an .xlsx file causes problems
Hi Admin,
Thanks for the info and all understood, it must be Windows Office (365 or whatever it's called now!) preview handler that is acting up recently. Anyway, not a problem, I de-selected preview of .xlsx as Highend suggested and there's no affect on my work. I'll just wait for the 64-bit version and enjoy that new experience!
A license question: I have the Standard License Professional now, when you have a major new version, perhaps the 64-bit introduction, then how should I pay for that? Maybe better to upgrade to Lifetime Pro beforehand and the new version would then be covered?
Thanks for your assistance, Kevin

Re: Click an .xlsx file causes problems
All licenses work across editions. (There may be a price increase when the 64-bit edition is released.)
To upgrade from Standard to Lifetime: https://www.xyplorer.com/purchase.php?lic=LL&tb=1&up=1

Re: Click an .xlsx file causes problems
Thanks Admin,
Oh silly me, I already purchased Lifetime License Professional back in July of 2017, I just found the code and PayPal confirmation.
My first purchase of Standard was in February 2016 so I didn't wait long to upgrade. Wow, I didn't realize that I was so future-proofed and pro-active back then!
Heck, I would be a zillionaire by now if I really was!
OK so all resolved thanks to Highend and you, I'll keep an eye out for the 64-bit version and I look forward to using it.
Best Regards, Kevin
