Netzwerkumgebung/Network Places - long tail

Post by ReviewPilot »

Hi again,

We have lots (LOTS!) of network computers in our company.
Everytime I open a network UNC address all the network computers will show on the left ("network places" expands it's first level), resulting in an incredible long and annoying list of unneeded computers. Now, everytime I wanna move to another folder agan, on a local drive or so, these network computer list is very disturbing.
Could it be done with a setting in XY, that only the addressed UNC computer gets opened in the "Network Places", not all..
or anything similar?

Cheers RP

Of course, this is one of XY's great and unique features since long!!

Check the help for "Cache network servers"....

hmm I'm not sure you know what I meant..

a) "List Management -> Servers in My Network Places" is greyed out
b) I mean, the whole server list is unneeded for me. It would be useful for me only to show the servers currently open in tabs, or no Network Places at all (but let the servers still being accessable through tabs..

another point:
in the new version of XY, if I close XY and directly try to restart it, it hangs (sometimes the whole system) - I have to wait 3 seconds or so before I can restart XY..

Ok so if I understand this correctly. If I have 'cache network servers' selected I should not see a whole spew of servers, only the one I connect to?

ie:

if I browse to \\myserver\share\ my network connections will expand like:
- Network Places
- myserver

instead of expanding like:
- Network Places
- randomserver1
- randomserver2
- myserver
- randomserver3
- etcetc

that would be what I want, exactly..

Yep, that's what it does. Enable "Cache servers....", then add/remove your servers in list management "Servers..."

aahhhh,

This will work for me. My problem was that I have over a 1000 machines that show up so I selected 'clear list' or editor mode and delete them all anytime I was in that menu which would just re-populate the whole thing and I never noticed a difference.

In a dream world for me I would prefer to never see any other machine under network places except for those I am currently connected to because even if I use the above method, over time it will begin to grow fairly large and I will need to edit it again.

Basically unchecking the option 'show my network places' would be perfect if it still allowed me to connect to remote servers. Either way what I just discovered in the server list management will be much better than it was.

Thanks

The cache servers option is under: config, startup & exit

Yuchheeeee!!
great fct, Don. hope you are still young so you will add ur knowledge to XY for a long time :)))

btw: would it also be possible to add folders on the servers to the networklist, so these are expandable..?
Like \\myserver\myveryprivatephotos\

so the list would be:
My Network Places
+oneserverIvisit
+anotherserverIvisitregulary
+myserver\myveryprivatephotos\
+..

As you will have noted, you can add them but they won't auto-expand. Might be something for the future...
