Firefox-Like Bookmark Toolbar

Post by adplmx »

Hi,

Is it possible to display favorites/bookmarks in a toolbar, same as Firefox does below the address bar? Sort of like the rapid access, but always visible on top as a horizontal line of buttons?

Thanks!

Hi,

You can do this in a certain way by using the new line separator in the toolbar. (I'm keeping the last line as a “favorites” line).

Aha!

That works, thank you.

A dedicated toolbar would be extremely cool though, with subfolder support. Great for organizing things. :-)

Sure it's possible. See https://www.xyplorer.com/release_25.90.php#Bookmarks

I don't think so:

Frankly not too sure what to make of this thread... so, the bookmarks feature is what it is and no changes are possible/wanted?

The thing you are missing is subfolder support?

Well, first of all I was very put off by the comment "Won't happen". That is an extremely negative reaction to a tentative request. I was about to just quit at that point. That might make me a snowflake (though I am 45 years old with two kids... so...) but I am not used to that kind of "fuck off" in professional settings. You can discard my requests if you feel this is wrong. But I am still here, so.

The situation I find myself in is that we realized that Windows Explorer sucks ass and we need a replacement (yay #1 one for you!). We would go Linux but several important apps we use are Windows-only or at least not usable on other platforms (Photoshop, Unity, ...) So, the less-invasive solution seems to be to replace Explorer.

This is why I am currently evaluating Explorer alternatives. I do use Everything (1.5a, as probably everyone else) which is fucking fantastic, but it's not an Explorer-type software.

The reason I am posting here at all is that XYplorer looks very promising (I discarded about 6 alternatives before that, so yay #2 for you!) and I am just checking whether our use case is compatible.

The use case is this. We are game devs. We have an extensive list of local folders which are relevant to any one project. For example, a given project has a root folder, it has a log folder, it has a dump folder (which are all over the place! Not subfolders of the original one), it has several subfolders for assets blah blah blah so it would be really cool to have a bookmark-folder-system where I can define a sort of folder ("Game #1") and items to that folder with individual links. Firefox (which sucks in other respects) excels at allowing arbitrary bookmark hierarchies in the sense that I have folders in my bookmark tab and they have items and subfolders for individual websites.

I realize you went the Chrome route in having "pinned tabs" (yay #3 for you!). While this is helpful, it doesn't address the need of multiple projects which have the same sub-items and individual sites linked to them. Chrome is bad at this as well in the same sense.

So... to answer your original question... yes. I would really like to be able to create a sort of "bookmark hierarchy" in the sense that I can create a sort of "button" which opens a menu with links to arbitrary websites, thus creating a more web-browsing view of local content. As folders in the bookmarks toolbar do in Firefox.

Sorry for the long text.

Philip

While some more sophisticated answer will come, as XY user myself, i'd propose you to check out: Paper Folders, Bookmark Buttons, Rapid Access Folders, Custom User Buttons+scripting own drop-down menu = all of these allow to create own "working space" in different ways. Some work pretty simple, some require more efforts(like scripting), but you definitely will find a suitable solution to get close to what you desire.

Oh dear, I completely agree with you and apologize for this moderator's grumpiness!

Regarding your question, the good news is that it can be done with "Smart Dropdown Buttons", which is just a buzzword for customizable toolbar buttons that do pretty much exactly what you want.

Via Tools | Customize Toolbar... you will find 64 user buttons at the bottom of the list of available buttons on the left. Add one of them to the toolbar, then right-click on that button when it is in the toolbar and select Edit... from the pop-up menu. We will skip all the cosmetic stuff (name, icon) and click the Edit... button to the right of the On left-click box.

Here you can enter all the paths you want, one per line, which will be displayed in a menu when you click on this button later. Different types of variables are supported, as well as indentation to create submenus. Folders are opened, executables are run, normal files are opened by the associated program.

Here is an example definition with screenshots. Note that the optional prefixed captions in double-quotes are only supported in the next beta version (v26.70.0403). I just added this feature.

I wasn't grumpy, just realistic^^

There are things that have been requested multiple times over the years and it's been a "won't happen" from your side :)

E.g.: A second tree (which would be by far more useful for the majority of users than the expectation that XY needs to be a browser (hey, I can get grumpy when I hear this :titter: ))
Or _native_ support for hierarchies in favorite file/folder(s)
Or tag hierarchies
Or hierarchies in the catalog
Or ...

So when I see a "bookmark management in a browser like fashion with hierarchies", _natively_: That was a "nope, won't happen" (anytime in the next 3 years)

There are a bunch of ways to give users something equivalent (via scripting) but none will have a bookmark (with buttons) bar with no additional clicks necessary (for the root hierarchy) that let's the user drag and drop it either there or inside "subfolders".

Not even possible to use the catalog for it, see above^^
