Question? Resolve cache path from current folder

Post by Schuller »

Hi,

I recently modified my Configuration | Preview | Thumbnails | by enabling <Resolve cache path from current folder> as my thumbnail cache path prior that was going to the AppData folder was growing rapidly with my NVR taking image snapshots at over 50,000 thousand per week. I had to delete around 100GB of cache regularly due to the constant writes by my NVR and so consequently too with this prior Thumbnails configuration, I was also deleting thumbnails that I actually wanted to keep. Anyway, It appears this option <Resolve cache path from current folder> is the right way to go in my situation of wanting to distinguish between the NVR thumbnail cache(which I don't care to save for too long) and then other thumbnail cache that I do want to keep. So now that I've done this, I can see when I go to any folders where I have the Thumbnails view set, the cached files (XYThumbs, .dbits, .ini) are created and stored at those locations which is expected and ideal, however, it is also annoying to see them showing now in all my Thumbnails view at those locations. So my question: is there anyway to automate the attributes of those cached files to hidden? or is there an option already that I may have overlooked where this can be done already. I've been hiding them manually but it is extremely tedious.

Thanks

You use "XYthumbs" as the cache path name?

Either use a global visual filter or more hardcore a ghost filter to hide that folder...

I completely deleted the path name. Should I still have XYthumbs as the cache path name defined?

Thanks, will look into Ghost filters and Visual filters...

There is also a tweak ; Tweak: make no thumbs: ext.ext
NoThumb=ini.dbits I had no luck in getting it to work now or in the past. There's also the thumbnail setting to "Show thumbnails for non-images", but even with that unchecked I still have thumbs for ini and dbits in my testing and more importantly, the ini and dbits files still show up in the ini cache file listing even after deleting the cache and rebuilding. Don, you may want to look at that. I'm not sure why that should be. Your best bet may be the visual filter or ghost filter as highend mentioned.

You may already know this, but you can also set up your thumbnail caches by drive instead of having caches in each picture or photo folder by having ?:\XYthumbs specified in thumbnail configuration. So, with that setting, you would end up with cache files in D:\XYthumbs and F:\XYthumbs, etc.

Yes, that will work perfect. To be honest, I think I read that somewhere but your mentioning it now again is reinforcing.
I wish there was a way to expedite my learning(and reinforcing) of everything XY can do as I've only been using it for about a year and half and so far my only regret is that I had not discovered it sooner(like 20 years ago). Maybe one day I can have a Neuralink installed and have everything XY can do, scripting and all, downloaded into my brain.

Thanks

The various methods for caching thumbnails to disk in the Help file is actually somewhat detailed and helpful.
Help > Contents and Index > Configuration > Configuration Dialog > Thumbnails > Resolve cache path from current folder
