Quick Video Preview

Post by phred »

Using 26.70 on Win10.

I just updated to this version and tested the Quick Video Preview to find that I can't get it to work.

I have enabled Preview > Audio/Video preview > Autoplay and Use native handling in the preview pane. I hover over the filename and nothing. I hover over the file icon and noting. I select the file and nothing. I have opened the Preview tab in the info panel and an image of the video is present with the notation of "Previewed as thumbnail" but Preview > Video preview > Preview as thumbnail is not checked. I have exited and restated XY with no change in the behavior.

Suggestions?

Thanks.

I suggest you check the provided info/screenshots closely, it is new feature to the preview pane, not Hoverbox.

But you might not have codecs installed if it has never played for you in the preview pane/panel before.

Ahhh ... looking at the screenshot you linked to I now see it's for the preview pane. Thanks.

But even with the .mp4 showing in the preview pane, and selecting the file, it does not play. Double-clicking the file launches it in Media Player Classic, so I would assume the codec exists. I even updated MPC to the latest just to make sure.

Now I'm noticing this error in the status bar...

MPC is totally irrelevant to this.

Not sure what that TabletPC msg means, but still based on the info you've provided my best guess is that you don't have the x86 codecs installed or setup properly, although it is a surprise for an mp4 which is probably just a h264, have you tried other video filetypes?

Maybe someone else has better advice.

K-Lite Codec Pack Basic covered me perfectly.

I just tried with a couple of .avi files and it gets even weirder. Nothing appears in the preview pane but the audio plays. And there is no progress bar in the status bar.

I'll install K-Lite Codec Basic and report back.

Thanks.

That's not strange, that just confirms it is a codecs issue.

Progress.

I installed the basic K-Lite Codec Pack and accepted all the default settings.

.MP4 files work as expected with audio and video in the preview pane. But there's no progress bar in the status bar. .AVI files play audio but there is still no video. And again no progress bar in the status bar.

I uninstalled K-Lite and reinstalled and "select components" (under LAV splitter) has AVI, MPEG-PS, and Windows Media grayed-out. That may account for audio only on .AVI files, but it shouldn't come into play for no progress bar.

EDIT: Correction- the three file types mentioned actually are enabled undoer DirecShow source filters.

Okay! A reboot of the PC solved the playback issues.

It should be noted that the progress bar in the status bar now appears. I had to close the Info Panel to get it to show. Don- you might want to add that to the release notes as it was quite frustrating.

Thanks to Don and Jupe for getting me through this.

Hmmm ... perhaps a bug?

In order to see the progress bar, I have to close the Info Panel before starting the Quick Preview. But if video (or audio) is playing via the Quick Preview and I open the Info Panel, the progress bar stays visible.

Sorry for being dense, Don, but where does that link show or state that the info panel has to be closed in order to see the progress bar? And why would it stay visible when I reopen the info panel (when video/audio is playing)? Yes, the screenshot has the info panel closed, but does that imply that the the progress bar won't show with it open? Except when you open it once the progress bar is showing with it closed.

The problem is that if I have the info panel open and the preview pane open and then select a video file, the video plays but there's no progress bar showing. If I start the quick video preview with the info panel closed, the progress bar appears. And if I then open the info panel the progress bar stays visible. So why doesn't the progress bar show when starting the preview with the info panel open.

If the progress bar can show after opening the info panel, why can't it show if the info panel is open when -starting- the quick preview?

- Open info panel
- Open preview pane
- Select video
- Video appears in preview pane
- There is no progress bar
- Stop video preview
- Close info panel
- Select video
- Video appears in preview pane
- Progress bar appears
- Open info panel while video is still playing in quick preview
- Progress bar is now visible with info panel open.

The progress bar should be showing whether or not the info panel is closed or open. The user shouldn't have to close the info panel, start the preview, and then open the info panel in order to see the progress bar.

Why is the info panel opened? What is it showing?

PS: OK, I get it. Currently, the progress bar in the status bar is not displayed when the Info Panel is open, regardless of which tab is displayed. I will change this: the progress bar will be shown even if the Info Panel is open, but not the Preview tab.
