Show icons for video thumbnails only

Post by c0thirty »

There is an option for "Show file icon on thumbnail". Could we have a setting to set what types or classes of files to show icons for? I would like to set it to only show icons for video files and not photos.

+1

I've never thought about it before but, now that you've suggested it, I think it could be a handy feature.

I often browse large folders that have many images and comparitively few videos. I have a color filter for highlighting the caption of video files, but when I'm browsing a large collection, or searching for something specific, I find captions and excessive file icons can be distracting, since it adds to the visual noise when I'm scanning hundreds of thumbnails looking for specific patterns, so I turn them off, but then it becomes very difficult to differentiate images from videos. I'd like a way to differentiate them with a minimal amount of visual noise, such as displaying icons only for videos, or a color filter border around the thumbnail when captions are turned off.

Did you try this?

Configuration | Preview | Thumbnails | Show film strip overlay on video thumbnails

Yes, this feels very disorienting though. The film strip edges brace the image rather than overlaying it so I really have to look even closer to not mistake which ones are which.

Because you use zero padding.

Yes, this lets me get more information with fewer distracting elements on the screen.

I should also add that there's a significant performance advantage for me when disabling captions entirely in very large folders. Besides a perceptible speed difference, sometimes when scrolling up a page or so none of the thumbnails display at all (even if previously cached), until I pause for a moment and then scroll up and down a line again to force it to "kick in", for some reason. Doesn't seem to happen as much when captions are off.

Interesting. Set this to 100:
Configuration | Colors and Styles | Fonts | Thumbnail captions relative font size (%)

Is it still slower with captions showing?
