Dark border that surrounds the selected file or thumbnail
I noticed a couple of weeks ago that I now have a darker border that surrounds my selected files in a list view or in a thumbnail view. I did not have the dark border on my laptop until I just this morning upgraded the build to Windows 11 KB5040442. According to Microsoft, "the black borders in Windows 11 File Explorer is a feature, not a bug. The build adds a border around the selected folders and files in File Explorer for better visibility of the selected file(s)"...and obviously XYplorer as well. Well, that's great, but I don't particularly like it especially on thumbnails. Maybe WinAero Tweaker will come up with a tweak at some point.

Re: Dark border that surrounds the selected file or thumbnail
Okay Don, I did what you recommended, but when I click on the filename itself below the thumbnail, the selection (or I should say the actual highlighting) isn't accomplished until I move the cursor away from the filename. Very odd, but I think it may be a bug. After clicking on the filename, I can move the cursor all around on the filename and even on the thumbnail (i.e., the entire area which would be highlighted) and the highlighting is not done. It's not until I move the cursor off or away from the filename/thumbnail that I get the file / thumbnail highlighted. The non-bordered affect is what I want though.
Edit: I should have mentioned also that the selection / highlighting is immediate with "Windows Theme Style".

Re: Dark border that surrounds the selected file or thumbnail
Are we talking about marking a selection (Configuration | Colors and Styles | Highlights & Dark Mode | Selections) or about marking mouse hovering (Configuration | General | Menus, Mouse, Usability | Usability | Highlight hovered items)?
But note that AFAIK nothing has changed recently in either area and everything is working fine.
Also note that when it comes to thumbnails, MDBU settings also play a role (eg Configuration | Preview | Mouse Down Blow Up | Mouse Down on Thumbnails and Icons | Allow dragging items by the thumbnail).

Re: Dark border that surrounds the selected file or thumbnail
Hi Don, yes, I'm talking about marking a selection Configuration | Colors and Styles | Highlights & Dark Mode | Selections. I changed that to XYplorer Classic Style as you suggested to get rid of the dark border around the selected file highlighting (see pic). I was previously set on Windows Theme Style. On that setting, the highlighting upon selection (clicking on the filename) was instant. When I changed the setting, the highlighting was as described above (i.e., the selected file became highlighted only after moving the cursor away from the filename or thumbnail).
I do not have Configuration | Preview | Mouse Down Blow Up | Mouse Down on Thumbnails and Icons | Allow dragging items by the thumbnail ticked...never have...don't like the minor blow up delay it causes.
I do not have Hover box enabled for thumbnails (via Configuration context options). Hover box for files in list is set for, only on the icon.
Highlighting of the file(s) in list view seems to be fine (instant as soon as I click).

Re: Dark border that surrounds the selected file or thumbnail
Alright, could repro and fix it. It was caused by your relatively bright custom selection colors at Configuration | Colors and Styles | Highlights & Dark Mode | Selections in focused controls | Use.

Wow, great that you see and were able to fix. I darkened the "Selections in focused controls" background color, and the selection to highlighting response was immediate. It does seem strange that background color would affect response. Thanks Don.

Re: Dark border that surrounds the selected file or thumbnail
A slight highlighting is applied to make the hover effect more visible, but with your colors it came out all white, making it invisible on your all-white background.

Re: Dark border that surrounds the selected file or thumbnail
Thanks Don for the explanation.
While we're on this topic, what causes the change in selection color after moving away from the filename or thumbnail? I made that selection background color a bit darker (B7D5F2) and it fixes my original issue as discussed, but when the cursor is moved away from that selected filename or thumbnail and I hover over an adjacent thumbnail (where I can see the faint hover color), the selection color of the initially selected file becomes darker. If I then move the cursor back over that initial file/thumbnail the background color goes back to the original background color. It's not a problem. I was just curious if that's expected (normal) and what causes that. Possibly just a focus change?

See "slight highlighting" in my previous post.

Re: Dark border that surrounds the selected file or thumbnail
Thanks Don. So it's a slight change when hovering. Thanks.
Edit: I reverted back to my original "light" background color with the new beta v26.30.0201 and I no longer have a change in the selection color when moving the cursor away from the selected file/thumbnail that I mentioned above. And that's true with a darker selection background color. It's probably happening but it doesn't seem as noticeable especially with the lighter color.

It's subtle. Light colors, light effects.
