How to stop a long branch view from getting "rescanned"?

Post by autocart »

Yo'll, hello,
How can I stop a really long branch view from getting "rescanned" every time when I just switch tabs back and forth?
I already tried disabling auto-refresh and enabling "cache search results" (with a value of "0").
Thx and regards

How long is "really long"?

FYI, caching branch views existed but was removed for reasons:

Code: Select all

v10.60.0101 - 2011-11-28 15:36
    - Configuration | Find Files & Flat View: Removed option "Cache flat
view contents". Reasons: Caching is not efficient compared to a
live flat view; and with a flat view you want to see something
      fresh anyway, not yesterdays papers.

Around 50,000 files.
Of course, it would be preferable if the flat/branch view stayed "live" but it should not get rescanned when I switch tabs back and forth. Just continue behaving as if I had not switched tabs. When I switch back to the breach view tab it takes a minute before I can work with the view again.

Well, that's not possible. Caching would be even slower.

ok, no biggy, thanks for the clarification.
Then I probably better do a traditional search.

I hope that the new Live Filter memory will apply to this scenario when doing a search and then filtering the search results down further.

1) when you do a find-all (*) traditional search, with caching, is it faster than a rescanned branch view?

2) it does

1) holy cow! reading from cache seems even slower than doing a whole new search (or branch view)!
Thanks for pointing that out.
In that case it would be better to do any search or branch view in a whole new XY window with just that one tab so that no tab changes can occur there (probably best as a Throw-Away-Clone).

Yep, Throw-Away-Clone is good for that.

What about using the Everything search script from the forum ?
It gives you a flat view and stays in a Paper folder.
It has the benefit to run in a few seconds, so you start with an actual list.
You can always go back to this after working with some files or dirs.
Windows 11 Home, Version 25H2 (OS Build 26200.7171)
Portable x64 XYplorer (Actual version, including betas)
Display settings 1920 x 1080 Scale 100%
Everything 1.5.0.1402a (x64), Everything Toolbar 2.1.0, Listary Pro 6.3.6.99

Hmm ... :maf: sounds intriguing.
Do you have a link to the correct thread?
If I search the forum for "Everything" i get ... well, everything or at least a lot.

Yes, it's a long thread, but easy to configure.

It cannot be faster than XY's find cache.

Nope, I was dead serious. The bottle neck not getting the file names but filling all the columns in the list for each file.

ok, but before, my tests showed that even a new search was faster than a "cached search".

P.S.: Anyway, I find it a tad too difficult to set Everything up and work with it. I rather use an XY throw away clone if I have to search or branch view with lots of files. Thanks for all the thoughts.
