Rapid Access Folder navigation keeps RAF as "parent"

Post by Malarki »

It seems that a folder reached via a RAF link keeps the RAF folder as "Parent" (breadcrumb up-arrow), and as "Previous" (breadcrumb left-arrow).

I noticed this when trying to use "Move Up" on the right-click menu of a file. It's grayed-out if I got into that folder via a RAF link.

I thought that was a bug and posted here; but am modifying that now since I see the breadcrumb actions. Those make it seem like this is a deliberate choice. In that case I suggest that the real parent, not the RAF folder, be used as "Parent" eg. for Move Up. As for "Previous folder" maybe the RAF is best.

I see no bug here. And "go up" is different from "move up".

I realize now that it's not a bug.

But it's very puzzling to be working in a folder for some time and then find that "Move Up" is grayed out. I couldn't understand why. Going to the same folder in a Fresh instance found "Move Up" active as expected. So did an earlier version of XY. And then my current XY worked as expected, in the same folder, which was baffling. But later I again found "Move Up" grayed out. It finally occurred to me that this was happening because I had navigated to that folder via RAF. And now I see that the breadcrumb bar shows what the parent folder will be. I just never had to be concerned with that before as there was only one parent.

Similar for working in a folder and using "Go up" (breadcrumb up-arrow). Normally you'd want to go to that folder's real parent; not a RAF.

Check out this thread: viewtopic.php?t=27475

... and reply to my question there that nobody else wants to answer: "Going up would take you to the real path, right? Out of the Rapid Access space."

OK, I answered to that thread. Basically, have the parent of a folder found in / via RAF always be the real parent. That seems natural to me, and I don't see any downside. But I'm very new to using RAF; just started a week ago.
