XYplorer slow, hanging, becomes unresponsive

Post by DanielMcKinney »

Been using the program for years, currently using 26.00.0300 on a Windows 10 machine.

The program has been hanging with the blue spinny when I try to do simple things, like leave one directory and go to another. When I try cutting and pasting from one director to another, the file transfer hangs at zero percent. The blue spinny will disappear, but the program is unresponsive. It's just unusable!

I've resorted to using Windows file explorer (God forbid) to get work done.

Sometimes these issues happen, sometimes not. I can't seem to make any sense of it! Any suggestions? Should I uninstall and reinstall? Is there a way to reset the program to its defaults?

It's driving me nuts...

Hmmm, sounds strange. Try unticking these two:

Configuration | Information | File Info Tips & Hover Box | Show file info tips
Configuration | Information | File Info Tips & Hover Box | Show Hover Box

Any better now?

Configuration | Information | File Info Tips & Hover Box | Show file info tips - unchecked this
Configuration | Information | File Info Tips & Hover Box | Show Hover Box - was already unchecked

But there is still a huge lag when opening a directory. There are almost a thousand files in there, all photos, DNG and RW2 (Panasonic raw photo). It's still hanging now after many minutes.

Can you show a screenshot of the complete XYplorer window while this is happening?

Looks like showing folder sizes is enabled, and your folders are large. Right-click the Size column header and turn it off.

That's what I see when I double-click on "cameras".

Then I see the following...

The columns then fill in, slowly, over time. Still hanging now after 4 minutes, still not completely there.

What columns are hidden to the right? Can't see them in the shot.

I just removed two custom columns, and the problem is gone! I guess I need to know how to do the custom columns safely before tinkering with that stuff.

You know what they say: With great custom columns comes great responsibility.

Yeah, size seems to be fine, no issues with that, or the "label" column. It's the damn custom fields!
