Cannot generate thumbnails without a crash.

Post by tmarr8@gmail.com »

I've been struggling with a recurring issue since purchasing the program a couple of weeks ago. Despite multiple attempts, it's yet to function correctly on my PC.

Core Problem: Always receive the error message: "The action cannot be completed because..." when attempting thumbnail generation.
Behavior: The program hangs following this error and becomes unresponsive. The only option is to kill the task in Task Manager.

I researched the forum and tried all suggested solutions related to the error message and thumbnail generation issues, to no avail. To narrow the scope, I created a subdirectory with four small MP4 files. The problem persists – unable to generate thumbnails, leading to program freeze. Clearing the thumbnail directory for thumbnail regeneration does not solve the problem. Changing the default program for MP4 files does not solve the problem. The only temporary fix has been to uninstall and reinstall the program. However, any interruption during thumbnail generation, like moving the program window, causes the error to reappear and the program to freeze.

I am at a loss for further actions. Any advice or alternative solutions would be greatly appreciated.

01. Never report a bug without the XY version number you're using

02. Create a fresh instance (enter: ::fresh; in the address bar and hit {ENTER}

03. Configure that fresh instance like this:
Go to Menu - Tools - Configuration... | Preview | Thumbnails
Tick:
Configuration | Preview | Thumbnails | [x] Create all thumbnails at once
Configuration | Preview | Thumbnails | [x] For videos as well

05. Go into that folder in the fresh instance, remove the 3 larger .mp4 (keep only the smallest)

06. Menu - View - Views - Thumbnails #3 (300x200)

Does it crash again?

Version is 24.40.0100 running in eval mode (I stopped putting the key in because I reinstalled so much).

The single smallest video does display a thumbnail and it hasn't crashed yet.

Then add the next .mp4 to that folder.
Do it with XYplorer itself, let it generate the thumbnail.
Until you've added all 4...

Does it crash at any point?

And the latest XY version is 25.40.0400 (at least the official one)...

Moving the files does not cause a crash and thumbnails are displayed. Should I upgrade to .0400 or continue with .0100 for testing?

If the fresh instance doesn't crash but your configured does (on the same folder with those 4 files) than it looks like a configuration issue. No urgent need to upgrade currently.

Attach the XYplorer.ini from the _crashing instance_ (and do confirm that it's really that instance's .ini file!) to your next posting

None of the configuration changes has anything to do with thumbnail generation...

It's not that one of that 4 .mp4 is defective, otherwise the fresh instance would crash as well.

Use: https://github.com/NickeManarin/ScreenToGif/releases
Create a short video showing how you:
Start that defective instance, navigate to the folder with the 4 .mp4 and the instance crashes...

I tried attaching a GIF. It's 8.4MB but I get an error message that it's too large. I tried to make a smaller version but did not succeed with the steps required to do the test. I've tried about 15 times now and it just takes a certain amount of time to record the steps.

After many hours and many experiments, I'm convinced this issue was caused by corrupt files in the directory where I wanted to generate thumbnails. Often, when trying to generate thumbnails with XYplorer, I would get an error message (Error: 6(0x00000006) Overflow. I suspected the possibility of corrupt files causing the problem.

Next, I used another program that generates its own thumbnails, IrfanView, and monitored the file where that program would freeze (the next file after the last thumbnail successfully created). I killed IrfanView in TM, deleted the suspect file (using Command Prompt with Admin privileges), and restarted IrfanView to continue thumbnail generation. Once IrfanView could generate all thumbnails in a directory, XYplorer would also generate thumbnails for that directory successfully, after first deleting XYplorer's thumbnail cache.

Also, Windows Explorer could now generate all thumbnails for that directory as well...after first killing the Windows Explorer task, deleting its thumbnail cache with Command Prompt, and restarting Windows Explorer.

WRT Windows Explorer, I think it's important to clear its thumbnail cache properly (without Windows Explorer running) before attempting to regenerate thumbnails. I'm not sure this is necessary for XYplorer, but it can't hurt and it's easy to do since XYplorer has a nicely visible thumbnail cache. I assume XYplorer should not be running when deleting its thumbnail cache.

Hope this helps someone...

Next time, email me the corrupt file. I can then handle this error 6 in a more civilized manner.

Will do. I received the error several times in a large directory (>9K files). There were several corrupt files there. How they became corrupted, who knows? My other directories were fine.
