2) Your Windows Version (e.g., Win 11)
3) Your Screen Scaling Percentage (e.g., 125%).

:info: We strongly recommend adding your Windows Version and Screen Scaling Percentage to the Location field in your Profile or to your Signature. That way, you only have to type them once, and we won't have to search for that vital information.

Shift + Right Click - Deselects all but one item

Post by Jeeves »

Explorer doesn't do this, and it changed sometime in the past month or two, it used to work fine.
Ctrl+Right Click - Selection Retained
Shift + Right Click - Single item becomes selected.

I do not know if it's related, but if I go from a selection to the address bar or search fields, normally it auto-selected the contents so that any typing overwrote, now it seems to go to the end of the existing text. This change happened in the same time-frame. If this should have a second bug report, let me know I can open one accordingly.

I think when Don fixed "my" bug, "your" bug came to life. Read this: viewtopic.php?t=26529

Does look like it has potential. Hopefully that'll make it easier to fix.

Ensure that this is ticked: Configuration | General | Controls & More | Drop-down Lists | Select all on focus by mouse

What app did you use in your gif to show keys and buttons being pressed?

I tried them "all", but I don't remember testing one which shows the icon of an active window.

The tool displaying the presses/etc is a fork of the original Carnac, super useful. There is a setting for that, though it lacks the option to scale the icon (Guess I could fork it and add that).

The recording app is "screen2gif":

Apologies; That's on me.
A detail I should have mentioned, these are when the keys CTRL+L or CTRL+F are pressed, I do a lot with the keyboard.

Here's a gif that shows two conditions, one where it doesn't work, one where it works as expected (CTRL+F Selects the existing text).
The same thing occurs in the address bar, I just focused on the search box.

I've been trying to determine the exact conditions in which it occurs, and it may not relate to the selected files.
Here's what I've seen, as these two tasks get different results:

1. Enter text into the "find files" name field.
Click into the file list (set focus)
Press CTRL+F
Cursor moves to end of text in the Find Files box, the contents of the field are NOT selected.
This causes any typing to append to the field.

2. Click the drop down next to the find files name field.
Pick any prior item
Click into the file list (set focus)
Press CTRL+F
The contents of the Name field are selected, cursor moves to end of text.
This allows any typing to overwrite the field.

The impact is in usability since CTRL+F does not feel consistent.
It should do one or the other (for the past decade it's been #2), not feel random.

The Address/Location field has a similar issue, but I'm more at a lost to find it's conditions.
Sometimes if I press CTRL+L it moves the cursor to the end. Other times pressing CTRL+L selects the text field. These items should be consistent, in either method.

Ah, got it! This recent change caused it:

Code: Select all

v24.90.0122 - 2023-09-12 20:39
    * Quick Search: Now, if there is a selector, the pattern after the selector will be
preselected in the search term retained from the previous search. This way it's much
easier to search for another pattern using the same selector. For example, here the
animal is preselected when the Quick Search dialog is opened:
        cont:dog
Next beta will work better.
