I like "The Glider", or "Tool Glider", or "Tool Flyer"--but "The Glider" most of all.

Great idea, by the way!

Just a preliminary thought to a work in progress on Glider. I think the horizontal distance away from the node could be a bit smaller. I realize you don't want to be too close to the node, but the distance could be cut back a little and still be safely away from the node point whatever type it is. Looking good though. I believe it will reduce the need to enter 2 panel mode as often.

I agree. I think it would feel more natural if the glider was centered right under the mouse pointer (if space allows).

Gosh, that fat plus/minus look ugly.
As far as being "ugly" as you mentioned in the other thread, if it only partially covers the node, it's not going to look so pretty in some cases. I think the best look for it currently is when there is sufficient horizontal space and the Glider points to the node and not the folder as it does when space is tight. It appears you have a slightly different shape when it has to point to the folder. Maybe trying to cover the node in those cases? Maybe the little stub pointer has to be slightly fatter to completely cover the node.

I will try to avoid the situation where it (half) covers the "knot" by moving the glider to the other side earlier. And I will add something nice to make the other side feel more natural AND also reduce mouse movement: There will be a hot zone at the right edge of the tree, and it will show the glider on that side.

The right edge activation zone sounds like a good plan. If there's insufficient room on the left, go right.

If there is not enough space on the right side
noting is shown or it stops on the pane like in this

No chance. At least not in that row. I might move it up or down...

Overall i like the feature, hope we will have some scripting access1-2 buttons is enough, so max there can be 4). Yet i hope it will be configurable where to show the Glider and its shape. For the moment i'm not fan when it appears on the right side of name as it's easy to move away from narrow name line(especially if folder's name is long) and lose Glider, while moving to right from nod/activation area on the left.
Speaking about shape, could be cool if by configuring number of buttons, Glider could change shape, smth like these mockups.

Btw, in the next version, the arrow will be as long as necessary to reach the folder name.

I assume that's applies when the Glider Bubble is on the right side. If that was the case on the left side, it could be messy (i.e., pointing to the node is fine on the left). Though there may be occasions when moving from one level indent to another, changing the pointer length may be appropriate on the left as well?

I'd say either activation area is around node and Glider should appear only near it(on left or right side of node, yes, even coverring the name), or right side after the folder name should be an activation zone too - to get activation on the left and move all the way to the right is quite uncomfortable.

Will we be able to turn The Glider on/off in, say, Tools - Customize Tree?

This.
Looks too bad to be standard, but could be added as a tweak.
Changed my mind and agree now.
