I never really chimed in on this because it is not something that is a deal breaker for me. But, since it looks like this may happen I guess I can chime in :) This is just a couple thoughts from me and I am not a big dual pane user so keep that in mind when you compare my ideas to someone who really wants the interface because they may probably have a better idea what they need from a dual pane interface.

1 - I think it should be easy to toggle it on/off because 95% of the time I would prefer to be in the current interface but it would be nice on occasion to switch to it.

2 - For me to use it I would need two trees. One tree would frustrate me to no end while navigating.

3 - top/bottom, side/side. Considering that I want the tree available for both panes the top/bottom approach makes more sense to me but I think it may be easier for most people to compare items if they are structured left/right. But, with a dual tree interface it could be very cluttered unless the trees for each pane are located above/below the main windows.

4 - keep it simple. I see most dual pane implementations go wrong because they clutter things up too much.

5 - It would be nice to be able to select two tabs and then hit a key or right click to open them in dual pane mode. Possibly go back to two tabs when switching away from dual pane.

I gotta get running for now but I still have a bit more to say.

Ladies and gentlemen, now that we're looking at formally discussing a final proposal for Don, I suggest that we do this in a seperate thread that allows us to start clean.

I created one here: http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?t=2293

There's no need for people (especially new users) to try to find this on Page 10 of this thread. :)

I think everyone knows that DP is not just the implementation of a new feature, it's an absolutely different approach to file management. It's not just about adding a second pane, that will not be enough for all the DP enthusiasts out there. If it isn't done properly they won't be satisfied. And when will they be satisfied? In the moment XY is a DP file manager from head to toes!

Another problem is that because of the DP thing the implementation of all the really great features, which XY set apart from all the other file managers, will come to a halt. And where will the implementation of new "features" end, because everything sounds like a valid wish? FTP, file encryption, autostart manager, built-in address book...and voila: bloatware!

Chances are good that you will wish in some months that you never had opened this Pandora's box. But of course you are the boss here, it's your decision. Good luck, Don.

There are so many assumptions in your post, that apparently there's no room left for substance.

I don't think this will stop other features, as DP can be integrated in phases over time, and there has been no promise as to when it would be completed...

And regarding all those other items, like FTP, etc: The difference that I see is that DP is essentially just combining two separate existing tasks/sessions within one task/session, whereas those type of features are not within the current scope of XY and may likely not ever be.

I think DP would bring in many more new users than adding FTP, etc, but that's just my theory based on reading various reviews/blogs.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.
