Browse to file/folder by writing file/folder name

Post by Murp|e »

Hey.

First off I think XYplorer is a great piece of software that fits my needs nicely. My favourite feature is definetly portable file associations since I have all my programs on a USB drive. I haven't found this in any other windows explorer alternative. Good work!

There is one thing I've found to be intensily irritating. It's probably an issue that's been raised elsewhere in the forum, but since I have no idea what it could be called, I haven't searched for it. When I open a folder in the right pane of XYplorer, I start typing the name of the file/folder I'd like to browse to, but XYplorer doesn't seem to browse down the list or only seems to do so sometimes or the first time?

To clarify, here is an example. I have a folder with the following files in it:
  • A file at the top.txt
  • Beautifull Code.ahk
  • Canadians are great.can
  • Centuries.txt
When I first open this folder the file at the top "A file at the top.txt" will be preselected for me. I would like to type "Cen" and have XYPlorer select "Centuries.txt" for me, so I can easily run/open this file by hitting the "Enter" key. This works like a charm in Windows Explorer, in standard Open/Save dialog boxes and generally a lot of other places. Is it a bug? Something that's been discussed elsewhere? For the record I've been testing a 30-day trial version of "XYPlorer 6.70.0000", but it didn't seem to work in the Free version either.

Thanks in advance.

Hi!

This is called find-as-you-type AFAIK and it works in XY ever since. Just tested it again: no problem! So why doesn't it work for you? :?

Maybe a misunderstanding? Any ideas anybody?

Hi Murp|e,
Welcome to XY forum. I use this feature regularly myself and its working since long time.
Right now i have the latest beta 6.80.0080 and I just created those files myself and tried typing "ce" and it selects centuries.txt which i can open by hitting enter. I dont know why its not working for you. Quite strange, cannot think of any setting which might prevent find-as-you-type feature.

Maybe it's a case of not typing "fast enough", which could look as if it's not (always) working ?

Hey,

Thanks for the replies, I've been waiting for a "Topic reply"-notification but I never received one because I hadn't activated that setting. (Doh!)

Since I last posted I reformatted my drive and reinstalled WinXP and the "find-as-you-type" feature seems to work fine in both the trial/free versions. Not sure what the problem was.

Thanks again!
Cheers,
Murp|e

P.S. Thanks for the warm welcome and thorough testing serendipity. Jacky, a slow typing speed could have been the reason, but it's not the case for me.
