Resizable Toolbar Separators

Post by laugust »

I'd really love it if resizable separators could be added to the toolbar. Having buttons in specific locations helps me work better/faster. At present, the only way I can accomplish this is to add multiple separators - which is time consuming and ugly. Having resizable separators would allow items to be positioned anywhere within the toolbar and would allow for virtual grouping of buttons. Resizing of the address bar would be nice as well. Thanks in advance for any consideration.

Idea:
As an workaround you can add one or more "User Button"s.
Edit this buttons and point them to an non-existent icon (just type 'bla' into the icon filed)

To make it more perfect
- For Name: just type in an blank ' '
- For On Click: just type an ';'

Thanks Stefan. I am using your suggestion. It helps a bit - blank buttons takes up about twice as much space as a separator and you can't see them. I prefer only a few buttons in my toolbar so it will take a lot of blank user buttons to achieve my goal. However, this does create a slight UI problem - the non-functioning buttons show their over state when mousing over them. Not a big deal, but still not an ideal solution. Hopefully, my feature request is worth considering and will be easy to implement. I was thinking of something like Firefox's toolbar options which include separators, spaces and flexible spaces - see below. I guess if blank spaces or flexible spaces could be added, then there's no need to have resizable separators.

Regarding the resizable address bar, I was thinking of something similar to the was the Safari web browser works. When you place your cursor between the address bar and the search field, the cursor changes and you can simply click and drag to resize the address bar.

Thanks again for the input!

Sorry if you already moved on from enhancing the toolbar, Don, but I think it might be a good time to re-evaluate laugust's old wish.

A bigger space separator and a flexible space option would be extremely useful in our now more tactile world of touch screens. The latter is what I'm particularly interested in since that would make it possible to right-align (or center) buttons.

Just to pile on, I'd also like to see something akin to Microsoft Office's "Tell Me Feature" that could essentially be a List All Commands toolbar button. Might help new (and older) users get (re)acquainted with XY's many features. ;)

Hi TheQwerty, until this gets addressed I wanted to point out something I discovered the other day. You can use text:    with any number of spaces after it to get varied blank space on the toolbar. You can even use all of the Windows emojis [Windows key +. (period)] after text: to get something like this.

And, you can assign a script as you normally would to your blank space.

Hey klownboy - thanks for the suggestion!

There's a few variations of that posted in other threads but it's good to document one with the new text buttons for getting larger spaces, or hiding custom buttons.

The key advantage of a flexible space, aside from not behaving like a button, is that it resizes itself when the window size changes thus always filling as much space as possible.

Understandably, this is a little tricky for XY with the scrolling toolbar option but I think it is well within Don's abilities.

Some good ideas here. I keep them on my list. I'm slowing down a bit at the moment. Prepare for a vacation, or an escape, it depends...
