XYplorer takes unusually long to open under Vista

Anyone else experiencing unusually long lag times for XYplorer to open?
Running a 2ghz core 2 duo processor with 2gb of RAM under Vista. Mine is taking close to 4 full seconds between double clicking the icon and 'on screen.' When I had XPplorer on a 600mhz machine with Windows 98, it opened about 2X faster than it does now. I went all the way back to V4.5 and it still opens very slowly under Vista, so it doesn't seem to be a version issue. I disabled my virus scanner, so it's not that either. User account control is disabled. Suggestions or ideas, anyone ?

Using Russinovich's Process Explorer, I now (think I) see what is taking so long. After starting XYplorer, 'DCOM Server Process Launcher' eats up the majority of the time it takes to open XYplorer. Anyone have a way around this?

Problem is that DcomLaunch is a system process and everywhere I read says to not mess with it. I'm trying to find a way to turn it off so I can at least see if that is what is bogging down XPlorer's startup. No luck so far. It was easier on XP - just download and run DCOMbobulator. It doesn't work on Vista. :-(

Therefore, my question is as follows: Is there a way that I can stop XYplorer from doing any checking of network or internet connections when it opens ? Something in XYplorer is triggering DcomLauncher and it looks like this is what is bogging down XY's startup. Does XYplorer go out and check network connections on startup, regardless of Option settings ?

No.

Try to run a fresh copy of XY in some emtpy folder. Still that slow?

Been there - done that. That's one of the first things I did - to eliminate any possibility of a corrupt INI file. Same thing. XYplorer tries to open in around 1 second, or so, but DcomLaunch runs for roughly 3 seconds and only when it finishes does XYplorer open. I am assuming that one of the things XYplorer does when it opens is to check internet or network connections. Any way for the user to turn that function off to see what the effect is ?

As far as i know, XYplorer does not check internet or network (Don already mentioned that). I dont know anything about DcomLaunch, but it might be something to do with network neighbourhood. Could it be that the network neighborhood is active when XY launches? Can you turn off nethood (config>general>show my network place) and see the same delay?

Here is what I know for certain:

1. DcomLaunch is a Vista system process that cannot be stopped and
started at will. It launches at system startup and remains an active
system process.

2. When I open XYplorer, 'something' in XYplorer triggers DcomLaunch
and this process lasts between 2 and 3 seconds. When it finishes,
XYplorer finally shows on the desktop.

As you know, 2 or 3 seconds does not sound like much, but it is an
annoyance when waiting for an application to start. Just with there was
a way to find out what it is in XYplorer that is kicking off DcomLaunch.

The reason I thought it was XYplorer checking internet connection is that
a very similar thing happens in Vista when you start Internet Explorer.
The application open just fine, but when you click on that first URL, once
again DcomLaunch executes and eats a couple of seconds before it
actually goes to the web site selected. Subsequent web sites open at
normal speed.

Would be GREAT if someone else running XYplorer on Vista would confirm
these findings..

I'm running Vista Ultimate on a Dell XPS M1530 Dual Core 2.6ghz w/ 3MB ram.

Xy just pops when I load it; however DcomLaunch is not running in my process list. I checked with Process Explorer just to be sure.

Depending on whether you are running on a server or WS, using the Windows Firewall/not or a network driver that needs it you may not need DcomLaunch.

In any event here is how you can surgically use it to launch then close it

You will not see DcomLaunch in your process list. Look for 'svchost.exe' with a PID of 864 - that is DcomLaunch. When I try to open XYplorer, this service runs for a good 2 seconds or more and chews up a lot of CPU cycles in the process.

Just for kicks, I started Vista in safe mode. Now XYplorer open 'as it should.' FAST. I know this DcomLaunch is the culprit - but stopping it is another story. Something in XYplorer is triggering it - just wish I could figure out what it is. I've checked the options settings again and again. Nothing there that should be looking at any external connection. When I start other apps that use the internet, they too launch DcomLaunch before appearing on my desktop. Apps that don't use any outside connection open quickly. For what it's worth - MS Windows Explorer opens very quickly...

I do see it (process 876 on my machine). It jumps very briefly in CPU time when Xy first loads but it happens so fast it is hard to follow the thread as it moves. However, on my machine it does the same thing with Windows Explorer and there is no difference in the load time between them.

Maybe set Xy to close to the tray? When you do this, reloading is not affected by DcomLaunch.

I *may* have to do with the WebBrowser control I'm using to preview HTML files. There have been other reports in the past that this control attempts a connection (by itself!) when loaded. I changed something (with little hopes) in the next version...

Danke schon, TestMeister! Should have thought of that myself. A good 'workaround' (starting in and closing to the tray.) Anxious to see if Don's 'may' work will do anything. Still trying to find out why DcomLaunch runs so long - several seconds instead of a 'blip.' :-(
