"Cannot access file because it is being used" when renaming

Post by elqasar2 »

Sometimes I rename files according to something I can see in their content, like a date or time (For example, to open a bank statement to find out what month it is for). Up until recently I'm sure it used to be possible to open a file in an external program, rename that file in-line in XYplorer and then before hitting Enter in the inline rename, close the file in the external application. XYplorer would then tolerate that brief time period when the other program was closing the file and then do the rename, without any error. I did this many times with success in the past. But this has stopped working in some recent version of XYplorer. Now when I try to do that, there is no tolerance. As soon as I hit close in the external application XYplorer immediately complains that it 'Cannot Rename' and that 'The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process". Is it possible that the recent change can be reverted?

When files are renamed (not folders) I did not change the logic in v22.10.0006, but just the error message. That does not explain the issue.

@ elqasar2: Are you sure it worked differently before v22.10.0006? (You can check an earlier version from the freezer: https://www.xyplorer.com/freezer.php)

It does, because the error message comes directly after leaving the in-line rename e.g. by clicking on the window that has this file open

With v22.10.0005 it tries to rename the file first which gives you a kind of grace time
