quick (keyboard) way to cancel out of search result view (or go back)?

Post by randfee »

Hi

I've been wondering for a while if there is a faster way to exit (go back to previews view) out of a search (find files) result?
For quick filters, a simple and understandable ESC does the job. However, for search results, I can see no satisfying way. ALT+back-arrow goes back to the previous location which is NOT where the search started as the search result doesn't seem to count as new location.
I'd love a solution for this... quite possible XYplorer already has a clever trick up it's sleeve for this.

regards
Arnold

PS: kudos to version 22+ great advancements as always!!!

so I figured out that F7 (go to previous location) does exactly what I am looking for ... but that doesn't mean I understand how this happened.

I saw that in the menu before but didn't try it since I thought that this would be the same as 'go back' which is triggered by ALT+LeftArrow or the LeftArrow icon but no, it basically goes back and forth BUT it also works in a search result (basically escaping the search result)... where ESC itself doesn't work.
Even more confusing, F7 (go to previous location) applied to a quick filtered tab does the same as ALT+LeftArrow... but like I mentioned, it's different again for searches and that is what I don't get. Why not ESC to cancel a search like one does for quick filters... maybe it's just me.

I have to say, this confuses me. How are they not the same behavioral wise? I understand F7 could jump back and forth and ALT+Arrow has a defined direction in the history. Word for word it makes sense though. As usual, VERY precise and clever.

Anways, F7 does it for me now, I can search for something and then simply return to the origin where I started my search all without touching the mouse.

Yep, F7 is powerful. I use it a lot. Also goes back to the previous tab in case you switched tabs.

I noticed a while ago that the button tooltip for :goprev lists Ctrl+Alt+F7, but actually that is the shortcut key for "Last Target", seems an opportune time to mention it.
