file preview covers part of the file name

Post by Tony »

Sometimes the file preview (docx in my case) is shown in a way that it blocks part of the file's filename. There's enough width on the monitor for the preview to be further away from the filename.

Problem confirmed.
That happens for me not only for docx files but also for PDFs.
Setting is to hover over the icons.

Not sure I understand. Can you show a complete screenshot of the situation?

Well, it must go somewhere. Sometimes the filename is covered. There is no alternative, and it's not a big problem IMO.

Agreed, we can live with it :)

Yes it has to go somewhere buy why it has to hover partly over the file name!? There's a ton of empty space to the left of the list of files area. Make the right edge of the hover box to the left of the file name area. Just figure out the x,y coordinates of the listbox, the width of the screen and place the hoverbox accordingly.

The placement of the hoverbox is annoying and should be fixed. You only fix big problems!?

Why don't you use the preview pane ?
For me the Hover box is just to get a short preview.
As I have to hover over the icon I always know the file name in this case.
File names can be very long and the entry in the list may be near the button
so there is no good solution where to place the Hover box.

I don't want to use the preview pane. It takes space from the screen for something I use very infrequently.
One can have multiple filenames that start with the same few characters that the hoverbox is blocking so you're not sure anymore which file you hovered over.
My example is the filelist in the right pane so it doesn't matter how long the file name is. They are extending to the right where nothing is blocking them.

I don't understand why we're debating this. There's a TON of screen space to the left of the listbox in the right pane. Just move the hoverbox a bit to the left so it doesn't block any characters of the filenames.

Keep in in mind when you say "There's a TON of screen space to the left" that not all users have your screensize, layout etc. and the initial launch position is calculated in 360° from the cursor not the edge of the screen.

If we are talking about the Hoverbox then the filename can be shown in the footer of it, negating your stated issue, if you don't see it currently, then try pressing S on your keyboard while the HoverBox is visible to enable it, also if you use the HoverBox so infrequently you could choose to disable it and use MDBU instead, or even just disable it for some filetypes.

I have a TON of space therefore the app should use it. That's why I said calculate the screen size and use the available space to spread the UI elements more apart so as not to crowd the elements in a smaller screen area. I am aware that not everyone has a lot of space but we also live now at a time where large screens are ubiquitous and cheap.

The filename appears in the footer when I click on a filename. The filename doesn't show in the footer when hovering over filenames. Even if that worked, there are times when the preview box covers up the footer area as well depending on how big the hoverbox is.

We're talking about workarounds that don't work correctly when all I am asking is to move the hoverbox away from the filename. That's good UI/UX.

Looks like I am going to disable this feature as it's more annoying to me than being useful. I will preview a file on demand by double-clicking on it and launch the proper app to view it.

Can we make sure we are talking about the same thing when we use the word footer, I meant the footer of the HoverBox (not the Statusbar), it seems you aren't talking about that since it is impossible for it to become out of view like you say, example image below.

Also there is no need to double click an item and load its external app, that is why I previously mentioned MDBU as a valid alternative, because it is an on demand preview that is movable by you.

I was talking about the status footer. The hoverbox footer is fine. I didn't notice it.

We can close this topic.
