Re: XYplorer freezes, slow loading of thumbs
I have a similar behavior, but it has nothing to do with thumbs.
On random occasions, XYplorer hangs, even if I'm not working on it. The weird thing is that it always happens when I have my laptop connected to an external screen and use only that one. When I'm using the laptop screen only, everything is normal.
Hope it helps to identify the issue.

Not sure I understand. How can you note it hangs when you are not working with it?

Re: XYplorer freezes, slow loading of thumbs
It's strange but even Explorer does not seem to use them anymore. Looks like they are remnants of older Windows times?

Re: XYplorer freezes, slow loading of thumbs
haven't used Explorer for years, but checked my Win7 and indeed it seems no more Thumb.db created locally in folder. damn, i just started to dream of using this method for lesser operations with thumbnails via local "databases".

I think it's now in %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\thumbcache_xxx.db.
Thumbs.db are created only in network shares (unless it's deactivated through group policy or registry).

Re: XYplorer freezes, slow loading of thumbs
Ah, interesting! There is a file "thumbcache_idx.db" that even XYplorer cannot open.RakSrinana wrote: ↑05 Apr 2021 12:32 I think it's now in %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\thumbcache_xxx.db.

Re: XYplorer freezes, slow loading of thumbs
meh, centralization kills the idea of autonomous databases.
well, will wait for maybe XY one day to implement this as own feature.

Re: XYplorer freezes, slow loading of thumbs
For instance, I am working on a word document while I have XYplorer minimized/in the background. When I click the XYplorer tab on the taskbar to bring the focus to that, then it doesn't respond, it is frozen and crashes (error message from windows and closes the app).
This happens to one of my laptops. In another laptop of mine which is contantly hooked up to an external display, this issue never occurs. Perhaps something else is wrong with that laptop.

Re: XYplorer freezes, slow loading of thumbs
There's no question that XYplorer is definitely generating a thumbnail cache dat2 and dbits files when in the highspeed mode. I ran a number of tests and looked in the thumbnail database (using Thumbnail Maintenance script). The question is, is it using the actual Windows thumbnails from the "iconcache_32.db" in the %userprofile%\AppData.... folder to build the dbits file or is it building it's own as it does in the other modes like crisp and smooth?

Re: XYplorer freezes, slow loading of thumbs
XYplorer always builds its own cache (if caching is enabled), independently of the selected quality. But with "High Speed" it *should* (ATM just an assumption) also use the Windows caching when creating the bitmap.

Re: XYplorer freezes, slow loading of thumbs
It is happening with the latest 21.60.0100 and definitely with the 21.60 because I remember waiting to see if that bug got fixed. I don't recall the version when the issue first started to occur. I initially started using XYplorer around v20.90.0300.

Re: XYplorer freezes, slow loading of thumbs
Hmm. Since the beginning of times there are only two known reasons for such crashes:
1) Faulty 3rd party shell extensions.
2) PDF preview using Adobe preview handlers.
Number 1 can be worked around by ticking Configuration | General | Menus, Mouse, Usability | Context Menus | Hide shell extensions from shell context menu.
Number 2 can be worked around by using another preview handler for PDF-preview (e.g. PDF-XChange).
