Maybe already considered, and maybe not as usable as it sounds, but... I've often found the zoom level to not be quite what I wanted for different pix.
--> With MDBU (mouse held down of course), moving the mouse "up" or "down" (as if there were a cursor) would cause the image to grow (zoom in) or shrink (zoom out). To some limits. It would start off at the MDBUZ setting.

With high-res pictures without zoom to fit the mouse moves the picture around, which wouldn't be possible anymore with your zoom approach.

Re: MDBUZ - zoom in / out via mouse drag up / down
I have thought about changing the MDBUZ zoom on-the-fly but did not find a good solution yet. I'm open to ideas.

Save the arrows keys to move to the next or previous image when you're in "stay up" MDBU condition.
