View of Files in a Pane

Post by FTS1987 »

For some reason, a few settings toggled on their own when I opened XY. This one is driving me crazy as I can't find the fix.
The view in a pane used to be such that columns of files would display and I would scroll across to view more. For example, column 1 would contain files A-F, then column 2 would display files G-N, then I would scroll to the right to see a list of files M-Z. So in one pane I could see 2 columns of files, A-N.
Now all of the files appear in one continuous column, and I have to scroll down to view the rest. I can only see files A-F. Then I need to scroll down to see files G-N, and so on.
How do I get it back so I can see files displayed in columns across the screen? Thank you in advance for your responses.

That option is already checked as enabled. Thanks though.

It does seem like you're describing List View.

Like this:
EDIT: Note that you have to sort by 'Name' to get alphabetical.

Thank you for your patience.
I've gone to Menu \ View \ Views and selected List already. I've also selected Menu \ View \ Sort By \ Name. But all I get is a single column of files. What I would like to see again is exactly what the screen shot shows in the last post.

I know this may sound like a stupid question, but have you tried to click on View > Views > List again. List view and Detail view will cycle between List and Detail. So when you click on List when it's already checked it will go to Details.

OK, I see where the problem is, but I still need some help. If I switch to Details view the "Name" column is super wide. So wide that I have to go to Single Pane mode to see where it ends. If I drag the Name column to make it much smaller, then switch back to List view, I get columns of files again. However, it seems I need to do this for every folder I visit. Is there a way to globally set the width of the Name column?

When you get the column sized properly, go to main menu heading, View > Folder View Settings and save that folder view. Make sure that Enable Folder Views is checked. You can always go back to Manage Folder Views and adjust settings later for any view you have saved (or delete them). Also under View, check out the Columns sub menu and Autosize Columns now (Control Numpad add). And, make sure you don't have some extraordinarily long file name causing the supersized column.

Building on what Klownboy posted, you can also access some of these settings by right-clicking the Name Column header. Also, there is a toolbar button for "Save Current View." THe toolbar button image is a capital F that is white with a blue glowing outline. RIght clicking the button also gives you some options.

You mentioned that your Name column was superwide. If this is the case, you should have seen a horrizontal scollbar on the bottom. Is it possible your WIndows Taskbar is covering it? If you indeed saw a vertical scrollbar on the right, then I'd say you're not seeing List View.

ALso, another thing to try: Type ::Fresh into the address bar and press enter. This will open an XY window that is in its default mode. From there, try to change from Details to List.
