selecting

Post by eaf »

Hi group,
I'm new here, and perhaps this question has been answered, but a quick search didn't find it. It seems so simple a problem, I may have missed it, but here goes (enough apologizing) . . .
Can I select consecutive files with just a mouse like I can with WE by "drawing a box" around them?
Thanks!

Hi Eaf!!
Welcome to XYclub. Yes you can select just like in explorer. Why? arent you able to?
BTW, check whether menu View>List style and make sure "full row select" is unchecked. and ofcourse multiple select should be checked.

Hi and welcome to the world of XY! :)

First, don't worry about asking a simple question as you're likely to get an answer much sooner! And as a newbie, we're also more "gentle"...

Yes, you can do the same "drawing a box" but you have to be a bit more careful where you are when you start it (that's my own experience)...
Otherwise, you may end up starting an app you didn't expect...

Addendum: I have "full row select" off, and find that starting my box in the line number column (set via Views) avoids most undesired effects.

Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

If you *like* full row select (I don't), then you need to start your dragging motion from the extreme edges of the List panel, so that nothing gets selected when you first mouse-down.

Hey thanks a lot! That "full row select" was the culprit.
And thanks for the fast response, too. (Not to mention the "gentleness.")

Thanks for correcting Jeff, I was wrong about full row select. but with full row select not all extremes but only left and bottom vacant area is accesible for drag-rectangle-select.

Unfortunately, it should also be noted that in the non-Detail views you can make an initial selection using the rectangle but are unable to use the same method (plus the Control modifier) to add more files to the selection like you can in WE.

One of the very few items WE is able to do but XY is not.

And that was discussed in this prior thread (I believe)
http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?t=1881 that I found while checking to see if any old threads related to this issue.

Update:

I don't use this technique very often so I'll defer to the others here with more expertise...but you see how quickly we respond? Faster than an anti-virus vendor! And the only time I recall that we were not gentle to a newbie was one who didn't ask but demanded in strong terms that XY be changed to match some other product in about a dozen ways...so we "dispatched" him shortly thereafter.

Very strange, that was fixed long back. I can do it here. Which version are you using?
EDIT:  sorry, i though you meant adding by clicking one by one. TRUE, one cant do selection that way.
