Funny: I had an idea, and j_c named it templates

So maybe: have a customizable list of templates. One named Default, beeing used for new folders etc.
And have commands like SetCurrentTo..., SetBranchTo... and SetAllTo... - each showing the list of known templates. What do you think?

Yeah, I really like the idea.

Another thing I would like to have is an option, that a new tab opens with the Default Folder Settings or - if there exists one - the Folder Specific Setting. If I have a tab sorted for example by the "Modified" column in the current version of XY and open a new tab using the catalog, the new tab is also sorted by the "Modified" column and I really don't like that. I know this is the standard behavior in all the major file managers but an option to have it the other way would be really nice.

Yup! I definitely agree with both of these refinements to the scheme I described...I really think having a choice of which template will greatly reduce the amount of "stuff" that would need to be stored to keep track of folder settings...
