Why can't I see tags? Proper Windows 10 tags.

Post by CFTwFSgJaLsDUrLv »

I have over 50,000 photos and files with tags. These are the tags that you can see in Windows File Explorer under the field "Tags".

How can I see these in XYplorer?

I bought the full version because it supposedly let me do more with tags including search by them. But I find that this is a completely different implementation of tags that has nothing to do with the Windows standard. The tags field is blank.

By adding a new column and using "Select Property..." - "Tags" when clicking on its header

No, this is not XYs tags database when using this column but the metadata of each file that's showing in this column...

Thank you again. You are solving all my problems today!

I had searched several times over the 4 weeks since I bought XYplorer, and hadn't been able to find any way to show them. All the posts and help files only talked about XYplorer's unique tags.

Now that I can show them, can I search by them? Sorting by them does not help, because any one file has many tags and the one wanted is unlikely to always be the first.

Sure, e.g. by entering this in the "Name:" field after using Ctrl+F
prop:#18:hello
This searches for the term "hello" in the metadata "tags" in the current folder (depending on the other used search settings)...

Super. I've also found in the manual for XYplorer that I can do boolean searching. Yay!

How can I get that information to show from PNG files? Can XYplorer beat Internet Explorer, which does not show those?

Many of my pictures are downloaded from the internet for my family tree, and tagged using Adobe Lightroom.
XYplorer finds the tags of the JPG files easily using the method above.
Around a third of the images are PNG rather than JPG, and the Properties v5.1 script does not find any tags. From what I have read the PNG format saves its Tags in an XMP section within the file, and whilst I have searched I cannot find out how to see what those are in XY, let alone display them. My coding knowledge is nowhere near good enough to work it out.

Using ExifTool I can see from the Xmp tab that both JPG and PNG have the tags in a field called Subject in a section
----XMP-dc----
Format | image/jpeg (or image/png
Subject | <the tags>

and it also looks as if they are in a field called Keywords

This is a similar JPG file

There is also a peculiarity with TIFF files. Using Properties v5.1 I can see that they hold the Tags in property #18, which is the same as JPG. But they don't show in XYplorer.

I can see the information that I want in the RAW view of the file! I just don't know how to get it out.

By using a custom column script that reads the the metadata -Subject from *.png files with the help of exiftool.
Or (again) by doing it once and tag all those files (exiftool is slow for single files...).

Code: Select all

$tool = "<path to exiftool>\exiftool.exe";
    $res  = runret("""$tool"" -Subject ""<cc_item>""", , 65001);
    return gettoken(trim($res, <crlf>), 2, ":", "t", 2);

Thanks again.

I must be doing something wrong because I get a message when trying to run the script
"The system cannot find the file specified".

I've double checked the location of exiftool.exe that I put in the edited script. I highlighted a PNG file and ran the script using Load Script File ...

Since when does a leading < represent a valid path under Windows?
and <cc_item> is only a valid variable in a custom column context. To run a script on a normal file it's <curitem>
