Confusion over date of file

Post by CFTwFSgJaLsDUrLv »

What am I missing?

I take photos, and use Adobe Lightroom as I import them to rename them to the date taken and the filename, for easier sorting.

Looking at a pictures folder to submit a different post, I wondered why on earth the filename was showing 20140327 when I took the photo, but the created date was 28/03/2014, the next day. Modified is different, which I understand. Then I found that the Date Taken is an additional field that has to be shown using the field "Custom 2:Date Taken". Shouldn't the date taken be the default for pictures?

I tried to work out what was default for Folder View Settings, but the instructions on this page don't work. Pressing F shows a red message "type ahead find (F*):..."

What has the file time to do with EXIF data in the first place? Two total different things.

Surely not, not every image format contains EXIF data...

It's not pressing F but the F-button!
And if you don't have it in your toolbar, add it (customize, add "Folder View Settings [fvs]" from the left side to the right side)...

You are correct, but please excuse me because I am long (since v3.1, so about 28 years) used to Windows which always shows Date Taken (if it exists) in its Date field, in addition to the two fields (Modified and Created) that are the default in XYplorer. Looking at screenshots (which don't have a date taken), Windows shows Date Modified as Date, because that is the date that the system took the screenshot on my phone, rather than the date the file was created on my windows PC.
Unfortunately showing the field "Custom 2:Date Taken" slows down XYplorer. One of the increasing number of ways I am finding that XYplorer is different from Windows File Explorer.

Thank you. My mistake. The instructions did not have an image and I had never thought of there being a button on the toolbar.
Found it eventually - Tools > Customise Toolbar > Select 'Folder View Settings' in left hand pane > click Add button.

Only if you add that additional column^^ Just the way as XY does it.

You could speed up XY by tagging your files by copying the exif date into e.g. the ex1, 2, whatever column.
01. Get the file from this thread: viewtopic.php?p=150223#p150223
Extract it and execute it on one of your images

One of the IDs will contain something like this: #012 | Date taken: <some date>
-> The ID for this property is #12 on my system! On yours it can be different!

Now go into a folder with your images you want the date taken read from the tags database and execute this script:
After (ofc) editing the prop:#12 into prop:<id on your system>

Code: Select all

    $taggedFiles = report("{fullname}|{prop:#12}<crlf>");
    $matches     = regexmatches($taggedFiles, "^.+?\|[^\r]+?(?=\r?\n|$)", <crlf>);
    foreach($match, $matches, <crlf>, "e") {
        $file = gettoken($match, 1, "|");
        $tag  = gettoken($match, 2, "|", "t");
        if ($tag) {
            tagitems("ex1", $tag, $file);
            status "tagged";
        }
    }
Afterwards add the extra 1 column to your view and you'll notice it's instant...

Thank you again @highend :appl:

That suggestion will take some time to digest and plan.

Meantime I have found that right clicking the F-Button allows me to apply a view to other folders. Brilliant. I will be able to set all my picture folders to show the date as above, and the Tags from Windows that I use a lot.
