PS: If there would be some exciting revolutionary idea, a really new way to manage files, then I would go for it. From scratch.

Create a replacement for the current Windows Explorer with C# or a new UWP app. Give it a modern touch, some tabs and scripting/extensions and you will win. I swear to you.

I take it as a compliment that you all have only a little idea of what it takes to do this. I don't mean genius but sweat. Thousands of hours of hard work. It seems easy to design a file manager logic, but the problems start with the environment: Windows. 90% of your work is wrestling with Windows, and for many years now, Windows is hardly documented at all. And it changes all the time. And your users always have a different version from yours. And things just don't work how they are supposed to. And your programming language and editor, no matter which language, have bugs too. You will meet them all, in the worst moments. I don't complain, it's still fun, but it's nothing you do parallel to something else. This is full time hard work.

Defintley not! E.g Files UWP (open source btw) is currently the most respected explorer even if XY and the competition can't hold a candle to it. it is simple and everyone knows how to use it.

the UWP platform is not the most prestigious one because among other things you can find a lot of garbage in the app store. But it has a future. Many things will also change with Project Reunion

By whom?

It's open source. Fork it, add tabs and scripting. Everyone will love your work...

Well Don, thank you very much for trying. I too am very sorry to hear this, but I will add that other than the 64-bit annoyances, XY for me is a solid, mature product for which I'm still very happy to have purchased.

You are also right, life is short, and if you are not happy doing what you do, then the effort is not worth it.

Very sad that you have given up, I thought you had more stamina than that. I was becoming suspicious that you were loosing interest in changing the language XY is written in, because of the number of updates that you were making. It did not make sense to me to keep updating, if you intended to change the programming language.
I dug out an old ZIP disk and looked at some of my code - 700,000+, 800,000+ and one even over 1,000,000 lines. 250,000 is peanuts!
Sad to see you go!

No, you were wrong being suspicious. The updates were minor bug fixes and minimal things that were easier to do than to remember. I worked day and night in the .NET code. The turning point is only a week old, when I noted the horse is not well, and then I checked it thoroughly and saw it was dying. So I got off.

Open 250,000 lines in Visual Studio, take a shower, make a coffee, and when you come back to the machine it might already be done with the loading. I'm not a turtle.

Sounds like there something wrong with your setup.

https://github.com/PowerShell/PowerShell

This project has 500.548 lines of C# code in it and VS takes about 10-15 sec to load the entire solution, after that opening individual .cs files is pretty much instant.

I really start to wonder what the project layout looks like.. before conversion and after.

You would then definitely love at least the speed of an IDE for Free Pascal, like Lazarus (which I have already mentioned before). It is not out of the blue sky that it's mascot is a cheetah (and not a turtle). :)

Maybe you would - not in order to start anything, but just out of curiosity, as a food for thoughts so to speak - want to glance over the open source file manager "Double Commander":

https://sourceforge.net/projects/doublecmd/files/

But - oh how I agree with this:
