XYplorerFree loads too slow

I'm a new user of XYplorerFree and I think is realy nice program. My one question, for the time being is why it takes so long to load (almost a minute using more than 90% of my CPU). I'm pretty sure I must have done something wrong when I was playing with its configuration settings. I think it might be trying to get information of our network servers. Other that this, thanks for a realy nice file manager.

Hi Tomhatz,
Welcome to XYplorer forum. Yes, that start-up time is really strange. Regarding that problem, read up this page and see if it helps.
Apart from that problem, I would suggest you to read the great XYWIKI which has innumerous tips and tricks.
However, be aware that you are using XYplorerFree (the last free version of XYplorer) and some of the help on this wiki might not be useful to you since it is constantly updated. However, you can continue to ask questions on this forum and i am sure somebody will help you out.

I've just checked the free version with several of the configurations from my registered version, and can see no difference in speed.

Do you have network drives - particularly tabs with UNC paths open? I know that Don has done quite a bit of work with how XY deals with network paths, and those changes may have come after the version that was made free.

by looking at the ini files from the full and free versions I can see that the free version saves all the networked servers (over 10K in my organization). I guess that when I run it it goes and checks every one of them if they still exist and that takes time.
I think this should be one of the first thing this file manager should resolve. Not even the win file manager is slow on accessing networked servers. Anyway nothing is perfect.

By the way I resolved my problem by recreating my ini file and then uncheking the "Save settings on exit" under configuration/General. What I gain by this is that the program does not save the servers that it might find from a previous session, thus it starts always fast.

By the way, another problem I see is that it does not uses the favorites of IE. It so happens that I have created a a special folder with all the links that I need in the IE favorites so that I can use it in the windows file manager.

Regardless, this file manager is the best I've seen, and it would be good enough even if I have to use it for my C: drive only. Maybe a better version will find its way into the freeware world.
I will try to get my organization to buy it.

As I'm not in a network setup, I'm kinda out of my element, but I was wondering if this slow startup is just when you initially execute XY, as if so, couldn't you keep it running all the time, as I do? I also use Hibernate so that my system is only rarely booted, like maybe once a week...

Instead of disabling save settings on exit you can uncheck "show my network places" before closing XY so that it starts faster on next startup. you can always turn it ON when you need it.
Regarding the IE favorites, you can always go to your favorites folder (I guess "C:\Documents and Settings\user\Favorites\") and add to XY favorites by using Ctrl+B or even better is to enable catalog [F8] and right click on the catalog and import your favorites as new category here.

I wish it was that simple. But as a developer, I have a lot of programs running all the time and I do have to reboot at least once daily if not more (because of program blow ups), that is a company policy.

But you are right, it is just a slow startup, and I do let XY run for as long as I can.

Thanks for your advise, but it did not work. You see, the list of servers get saved on the ini anyway so the next time you get in the program it tries to load them even if "show my network places" is unchecked.
Even the full program shows ALL the servers of the network as soon as you need to go to any of them. This is too much to show when the program is used in a big network like ours. WIN file manager will just open the network places show the server and just a few others NOT the whole network.
Anyway, I'm sticking with my conversion of not saving on exit.
Thanks for your other suggestion on the Catalog idea.

You got it -- almost. It was not even the checking if they exist. The mere process of reading 10K INI keys is so slow! The solution came in v5.60:

        added an option in Configuration|Advanced: Cache network servers 
        between sessions.
      - As a reminder: The cached list is editable in List Managament | 
        Servers in My Network Places. Allows you to (a) show only those 
        servers you actually need, and (b) manually add servers from 
        other than the primary/default domain/workgroup.
      - Note that to refresh/reread the servers you simply select My 
        Network Places in the tree and press F4.

I have to admit the app is really good to the point that is addictive.
I have been using the free version for some time so I thought to give a try to the real thing.
Basically I have found two problems.

Getting to a network directory is too slow.
- If I have a server mapped to a drive getting to the server is quick but if I need to get to the actual server name is pretty slow. Like going to S:\CEReportOutput\SLAtracker\ it would be quick but if I type \\crscms1\CEReportOutput\SLAtracker\ it would take like 40 seconds or so in our network).
  When I get to the server I would see listed every server in the network, It just makes the file tree too busy.
  By the way none of the above points happen with File Explorer.FE is realy fast going to any server/directory in the network.
Messing up the TextPad Tab bar.
- If I'm running TextPad and XYplorer and Xyplorer gets in front of the TextPad window, it gables up the Textpad Tab bar. There are ways to get it back, but why is happening?

Are these bugs of the app or I don't know how to use it?
