Selection "drops out" using Shift+Arrows

Post by Gandolf »

It appears to be related to the list being refreshed. If I'm selection a group of files using Shift+arrow then the files already selected are de-selected and the selection starts again from the focused file. New files are being downloaded by a download manager and it occurs either when the file has finished downloading (at which point the file is renamed) or when a new file starts to download. I'm not sure which since the two events occur almost simultaneously.

In fact, select several files, keep the shift key held down (don't change the selection), wait until a file has finished downloading then press an arrow key. All previous selection is lost and selection starts with the focused file.

Auto refresh on file system changes is on. Is it something that can't be avoided when the list is refreshed?

It can, just suspend auto-refresh so the list won't be refreshed : View|Suspend Auto-Refresh (Ctrl+R)

And if you want to refresh the List, just re-activate AR or press F5.

Pointless.
The whole purpose is to see the files as they come in so Autorefresh must be on. I can't keep pressing F5 continuously just in case something had arrived.

Well, I believe the problem occurs when the List gets refreshed while you have a key(/mouse button) down, so you could suspend AR while making your selection, then re-enabling it. You only suspend AR the time you need to make your selection, that's all.

Otherwise no, AFAIK there's no way to avoid it.

Can't be avoided. Selection states can only be stored by list positions or by file names. Both can be changed by a refresh.

Pity, at least three other file managers don't exhibit the problem.

Oh yes, I forgot a third way to identify files. So, I believe you.
