Grouping in file view + extended color filter

What I meant by additional column was a column just for coloring or even for free choosable background graphics. Like a vertical colored graphic stripe.

So in this column, couldn't one also thus have a literal or text giving the group that the item falls into? Looking at the x2 docs, they have various predefined grouping based on dates, and having that group "name" as a value in a column might be easier to handle for list/scroll processing than a separator line, right?
I also see where x2 allows user to define their own grouping, so maybe using a variant of color filters + regexp or similar would be ideal, such as ".txt older than 1 week", ".jpg older than 2 weeks" and thus both of these could be in one combined list, yet sorted by the two groupings.

Why not use for grouping in the file list the colored boxes that are already used in the tree list? I use them a lot already and they help in focusing on the right directories.

For example, I would define a box for files that are younger than 1 day
(I think most of the time, 2 groups are enough to focus on the right files)
Box definition could be defined by a new menu that should prevent box overlaps.

Question:
Should boxes contain the whole lines or only the parameter column of group selection? The whole line could be graphically heavy to look at.

Recommendation:
Color filters and box grouping should be based on more than file type. It needs size, times, and all file parameters available. Maybe the GUI from file search could be partially re-use to define the criteria of boxes. This menu is geat since one can use several criteria at the same time.
