removing xyplorer and restoring XP default handling.. please

When XYplorer was installed I downloaded the non install version as well as running the .REG file located at http://88.191.26.34/XYwiki/index.php/FA ... anager_.3F

I want to remove XYplorer as well as restoring the default handler for XP Pro. How the heck do I do that?

Since that reg file does not change any existing registry keys, only adds new ones, you should be able to simply delete the keys named "XYplorer" under HKCR\Directory and HKCR\Drive using regedit.

The standard disclaimer about being careful while editing your registry, etc, apply here.

As far as removing XYplorer - it makes no changes to the registry itself, so all you have to do is to delete the directory that it's in - since you downloaded the no-install version only you can say where that is (the installer puts it in "C:\Program Files\XYPlorer" by default).

I've not done this mod myself, but reading the wiki, it seems there are two existing keys that have values added to them:

Set the default value of HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell to: XYplorer

and

Set the default value of HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell to: XYplorer

On my W2K system, these keys have a data value of "none".

But I'm wondering: Why would you want to remove XY?

What did it do (or not do, or what did we do or not) that caused this? Your user ID also implies a problem exists...

The "-" (minus sign) does the removal of the valuename and data.

So, in the example in the Wiki Reg file, if you change:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell]
@="XYplorer"

to

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell]
@=-

it should remove that key. The same will apply to the other keys.

I agree that using the "-" will remove, but I'm not 100% sure that the two keys I mentioned should be deleted...they may just need their values deleted...there is a slight difference, right?

Because you can use the "-" as prefix to key name to delete the entire key, as in:
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\XYplorer]
Correct?

The Wiki post refers to "Create a new key..." not to modifying an existing key. This implies that the key is not there. If the key exists and the Reg file modifies it then the Wiki post should make it clear that the original key will be changed and another Reg file posted to revert it back to normal.

As I had mentioned here, those changes can easily be undone of course. I've just added a little mention of that in the wiki.

Just to be clear, in the wiki the keys refered to for creation, as jc said, are new XYplorer keys (with XYplorer as names), but their parent (e.g. Drive\shell) are not created, only their default value is modifed.

You should most certainly not remove those keys, but restore their values to default (which is nothing, empty, "")

I used this and had some minor problems with it. Can't remember the details but it was easy enough to sort out afterwards. Just use it with caution as I don't think it does the job completely.

I use TrueCrypt www.truecrypt.org and XYplorer does not work properly with mounted volumes created by TrueCrypt. I use XYplorer to view files in the mounted drive and then when I am finished with the mounted TrueCrypt I click on another partition so that XYPlorer is not displaying the contents of the mounted volume. When I tell TrueCrypt to dismount the volume I get an error message: "Volume contains files or folders being used by applications or system, Force dismount?

I have to totally exit XYPlorer to get the dismount to work.

P.S. What is the concensus to my question about removing XYplorer? Do I change the values stored in keys to "" in the registry?

In all the back and forth discussions above, you may have missed the note by jacky that he'd updated the wiki with new info on how to "undo"...see http://88.191.26.34/XYwiki/index.php/FAQ#Undo

And sorry to hear of your problems with XY and TrueCrypt...I'm sure that someone will have some input on how to solve this so that you can continue to use XY...though it may take some time to get a resolution, ok?

Sounds like a bug to me. You could have tried to report this, instead of simply giving up on XY. You already passed the anti-robo test to join the forum, so what is stopping you to report a bug? Bugs are usually fixed here... but I understand that this can't be expected when I think of some other forums I know.
Well okay, now you have reported the bug. I'll try to fix it. Here's my question: (If you still have XY) I would ask you to try to turn off auto-refresh and see if the problem persists. Thanks!

Well, as Don said you can have asked for help regartding that matter, I'm quite certain many people would have been pleased to help you.

Let me add that I do use TrueCrypt and I just went to a mounted drive, previewed a few files, went elsewhere and unmounted. It all worked flawlessly!

Truth is, though, I don't usually unmount that often. I have however noticed that an USB drive I used and whishes to unplug at times will get locked. When it happens, Suspending Auto-Refresh usually works, if not I just use Unlocker. (Note that XY isn't always at fault there)

I'm afraid that, if drive is locked, but unlocked after stopping XY, then XY should cause the problem?

Sometimes I use truecrypt - will possibly try to test it here.

Well, it does undo what the first REG does. Keys that were created are removed, and changed values are set back to default.

The only thing, as I said, is that is resets to Windows default (eg. Explorer), so if before you already had another app set, it won't be set back, Explorer will.

Thats said, usual caution here : all registry changes like any other configuration changes should be done with care, and a backup.
