Settings per folder

Post by Adequat »

The one and mainly only one feature I miss in this excellent software is this one (after several months of usage):

The ability to remember sort settings (and why not view mode) per folder.

I can understand that you can't do that for all possible folders. But there are two easy solutions then:

1) Auto mode: Remember eg. the settings for the last 20 used folders (LRU...)

2) Manual mode: the user decides that a specific folder should open with the given settings. Then when a folder opens in a tab, XYporer checks if some predefined settings should be used for this folder....

Thanks for listening

This is a very popular wish, and sometimes I find myself thinking that I would like it too. Especially the latter can be interpreted as a good omen...

But hardly before 7.0 ...

I could see a combination of Adequat's options as best scenario, as user may have certain folders that they always want to retain settings for, but which may not always be the last 20 used...

If one were able to define a limited number of "profiles" (maybe 5-10?) and then assign that profile to a folder (or folders to profile) so you could minimize the total number of combinations needed to be stored, that might be good idea...similar to Templates in a way...
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Not really necessary. For the 3 tree highlightings (Fav, Hilite, Boxed) I have individual and unlimited lists that have to be checked against every displayed folder. Even with 1000 colored folders (I tested it) you will hardly note a slowdown. Today's machines are fast and XY is a slick piece of code.
So I would handle it exactly as the highlights: You click "save view" and the folder is added to a list. You click "lose view" and it is removed.

Easy stuff. Just right now I have no head for it...

Thats exactly what i asked 2 years back! See here.

But, since there is the toggle feature its not as bad now. But still, waiting for this feature to come one day.
My only concern is people switching from explorer might ask, explorer has it, why not XY? You know what i mean?

I was thinking of it more in the ability to have a predefined setting could be easily applied to another or new folder, so you could have a profile that you could apply to your music folders, another for image folders, etc.

WinExpl has the ability to apply settings to all folders, but that's rather limited, so I was thinking of expansion of this concept somewhat...yes, you could then override and tweak settings, if desired, for a particular folder, but having an inventory of profiles would still seem practical, even if not needed for performance reasons.

No, WinExp does remember view settings for each folder, its optional.

Yes, I was aware of that, but my point was that WE doesn't have any easy way to apply a common setting to a particular set/group of folders, as far as I know...maybe I didn't really state that as well as I could have.

Aaah, sorry i should read that properly in the first place. You mean views depending on if its a music folder or photo folder etc right?
I think once remember tab settings per folder kicks in, users will automatically choose what tab-setting is best for them.
However, its an interesting idea to have a set of standard tab settings based on what folders you use, like for eg. photo folders would have thumbs view and preview info panel tab ON. regular folders would have details view and search info panel tab ON.
It sounds too complicated, as XY has to make a decision if the folder is a regular or photo folder or music folder. i think its best to have it the way it is now and additionally have an option to make XY remember certain special settings per folder. Like adequat said, remember last 20 (or more) recently used folder settings.

Just a few days ago i put this wish into my signature :)

i'd only need this function to remember the settings for a handful of folders ("Sorty by Date", because only the newest ~10 files are of interest). In all other folders i use "Sort by name" as standard. Since i have to switch between these types of folders very very frequently i constantly loose time changing the sort order (of course only a minimal amount of time compared to the time i saved since using XY :D ).

What I don't like about this topic is: different users probably want to remember different settings. One wants the view but not the sort order, the other vice versa, the other both... this is where it gets messy (not to program, that's simple, but interface wise).

But maybe I'm wrong and we all want the same? So, I ask everybody: "Remember this folder's view settings" -- what shall those settings be?

View
Sort Order
[The following only applicable to Details View, hence: let's forget about it! But I let you read it anyway:]
Column Widths
Column Order
Column Visibility

In Windows Explorer i also saved a different length for the name column sometimes (E.g. in folders with very long filenames).

But for me, view and sort order would suffice.

Apart from all that, remembering IP tab would be nice too. For eg. my music, video and photo folders/tabs will have preview IP always ON.
