Zip support - again

Post by Fw190 »

Hi,
I have been looking at the trial of xyplorer and generally like it but am having problems with zip files, when I was checking xyplorer out I noticed it said in the features list that it supported zip files and I found stuff about zip in the help files but I can't get it to handle them at all, windows explorer keeps opening, so wondered if there was some secret setting or something for them.
I searched the forum and found lots of stuff about zip's but nothing has worked for me so far, also tried altering the 'zip' file association in windows 10 but it doesn't even show 'zip' as an option.

XY doesn't support opening .zip files as folders (so that you can directly interact with their content inside a pane)

It was the very bottom of the page linked below, that led me to believe that it did support 'zip'.

The trial I have been looking at doesn't seem to support zip in any form.

You can view zip file contents in the preview pane (Ctrl+F11) or the Info Panel (Ctrl+4) or a popup dialog (F11) unless maybe your OS has zip support disabled somehow, if the above doesn't work do zip files open in Windows Explorer ok?

Thanks for that jupe but think I will just stick with letting windows explorer open them if xyplorer can't do anything else with them, it's not a deal-breaker but still undecided about registering xyplorer.

What do you mean can''t do anything else? it can Add to Zip, Extract, List etc all the usual functions, check out the "Zip" menu in the context menu of a selected file.

The only thing I get in the xyplorer context menu when on a zip file is 'extract all' ( hadn't spotted that before) can't find a "zip" menu anywhere, other than that there is the standard windows menu offering of 'send to-compressed (zipped) folder' that comes up on all files.

You must have changed the default settings, check this is enabled:

Configuration | General | Menus, Mouse, Safety | Context Menus | Custom items in shell context menu

and press this button:

Configuration | General | Menus, Mouse, Safety | Context Menus | File List...

And make sure Zip is enabled in the dialog.

or make sure you haven't enabled this:

Configuration | Other | Shell Integration | 64-bit Windows | Show the 64-bit context menu

Thanks, it was the 'Configuration | Other | Shell Integration | 64-bit Windows | Show the 64-bit context menu'.
I noticed the install file said it was for 32 and 64 bit version but it installed to the (x86) folder so I wondered if you were supposed to turn 64 bit features on.
I've also just noticed that some options I get with windows explorer are missing from both of these xyplorer context menus, for commands that some third party software puts on them, is there any way to turn them on?

Look at the context menu, it has an entry to call the 64-bit context menu from it...

I had spotted the 64bit context menu option but the context menu items inserted by third party software are not showing in either of them in xyplorer but they are showing in the windows explorer context menus.

And which items from which software are missing exactly?

XY version information?

One that is missing and often comes in very handy in windows 10 is 'IObit Unlocker'.

I looked for alternatives and installed one just called 'Unlocker' and it is not showing in XYplorer either but it came up in windows explorer straight away.
Also tried setting xyplorer to 'run as admin' but it did not make any difference.

I wondered if it might be anything to do with it being in the 30 day trial mode, also got a copy of the xyplorer free version and it is not showing them either.

I am also looking at a file manager called 'free commander' and these items appear in it's context menus, though it doesn't look as good as xyplorer.

Xyplorer version 19.5

Yeah, a few programs refuse to show up in the context menu that XY loads. Rather rare, but it happens (still unknown why exactly they aren't shown). I can confirm that it happens with IObit Unlocker as well...

It's not the problem that you're using a trial version
