Windows 7 freezes when using XYPlorer

Post by pulp »

On my work computer Windows 7 freezes about 1-2 times a week. Always before that I do an action with XYplorer. For example, selecting a folder or file and usually switching to a folder. I believe that a change to a network share folder the effect occurs more often. Eventually whenever a hard drive has to wake up first.

If Windows freezes i can see the Windows wait cursor for a few seconds then the monitor shows the last desktop content. Time on the bottom right (clock in panel) does not change anymore. Using keyboard and mouse via USB is no longer possible. Connecting a PS2 keyboard does not work either. Logging in via Remote Desktop is not working either. It only a restart helps.

I have not used XYPlorer for the past 3 weeks and had no freeze. Of course, it can be coincidence.

Do somebody have an idea how to narrow that down? Is there any function/Winapi/Systemapi Trace in the XYPlorer that I can activate to see what XYPlorer do before the freeze occure?

XYPlorer version: 19.40. If I remember correctly, I had no freeze in earlier version., Eg 1-2 years older.
System: Windows 7 with i5 CPU. Hard drive: C: SSD is otherwise hard disk. This freezing I have only at work. Not at home with Windows 10.

There is a known Windows 7 defect which causes the system to become unresponsive; sometimes one can use Alt-Ctrl-Del to get into the task manager, but sometimes this doesn't work either.

The situation occurs when a wireless mouse connected to a USB hub is being used (for example a Logitech mouse with its little USB dongle). The "hub" can be something as common as a laptop docking station. I have encountered this on a Lenovo W500 mated to the corresponding Lenovo docking station.

If the dongle is connected directly to a USB port on the PC (No Hub) all is OK.

Lenovo has acknowledged this defect, but will not address it because the system is too old.

For some (unknown to me) reason, using XYplorer exacerbates this problem, although I have been able to recreate the failure by doing a lot of rapid mouse movements and scrolling with the Windows Explorer.

Thank you for your feedback. Unfortunately i use a cable mouse. But i also think thats a hardware problem (USB?, videocard?) and XYPlorer is just the programm who triggers the problem.
