Request: Edit Meta Data in Info Panel

Post by ethanpil »

What do you think about adding the ability to edit meta data in the info panel? I often want to view or edit these things:

Image Properties
MP3 Tags
MS Office Properties (Author, etc)
etc

I know there are other tools I can use to do these separately, I was hoping that I would be able to do these things within XY...

I'm curious if "double click property editing" is achievable within XYPlorer too. I did do a quick search, which has resulted in myself digging up this thread. No doubt there's other discussion on this, but right now I have an exam coming up & am already procrastinating. :)

Attached below is a screenshot. It shows myself using Windows 7 Windows File Explorer (on the left) to edit metadata of some photos taken in class (Horticulture :appl: ). Curiously I thought of how I might approach the same workflow within XYPlorer, and surprisingly I couldn't figure XYPlorer out to do the same simple job that Windows 7 explorer does out of the box.

Within XYPlorer, I managed to show the metadata that by default was showing within Windows File Explorer (was a little confusing at first, but I got there in the end), however, I can't for the life of me figure out how to simply edit property data/metadata/exif data (as an ignorant user, these are all the same) within XYPlorer, at all. As in, although I can read the metadata within XYPlorer, the data is untouchable. Yet in Windows Explorer, although clunky, you can edit it.

In a perfect world, I'd love a form of "grid edit" within XYPlorer that allows me to simply double click the property, enter in the value, then press either "return" or "tab", continuing to the next property OR continuing to the same property within the next file. Spreadsheet file property editing as such.

Would be a nice feature, indeed...

But e.g. for tags it would require a lot more "behind the scene" work.

XY uses it's own tagging system and while you can read the tag information from the file you can't write it atm.

i'm curious how edit feature may be included -build-in hex editor?.
though i'd be glad to have it too. just direct text filed edit, like with dates.

Editing EXIF tags is indeed planned for 2017.

Would I love to be able to edit Vorbis Comments, too, directly in XY - and any other built-in functionality you'd care to add for them as well.

Edit:

You've done a fantastic job supporting vorbis comments. Anything else I need is provided by a free file handler: http://www.softpointer.com/AudioShell.htm

Anyone else seeking quick bulk tag editing from the context menu in XY, I highly recommend they check this out. Freeware from a reliable company - no garbage attached - that fits in beautifully with XY.

This is most exciting news, thanks for sharing! Lucky my study goes throughout all of 2017 too, so would be nice to see this feature before college starts late February.

EDIT: It's not like showing/hiding file properties is easy in Windows 7 either, as this is how I ended up sorting out the Property Pane in Windows 7, editing via RegEdit -_-

I would second this request, not only for EXIF but also for MS Office. I must admit that in my frustration of XYplorer crashing so often under certain circumstances (see other thread) I had a look at directory opus[1]. One of the things that really got me was the very, very clean way to edit document properties.

No, I won't place any screenshots here. Still hooked to XYplorer, for many reasons :)

Cheers

André

There is no such plan at the moment. Feels a bit like bloat to me. Why not use that other software for such tasks?

For exif data I suggest ExifToolGUI. Can't get better than that and portable to boot. Using the catalog, scripting or even PFA, XY is infinitely extensible using already available third party tools.
I want XY to serve soft ice cream. Please Don, make XY serve soft ice cream.

Hi, do you know of any 3rd party tools to quickly edit Office doc properties? I'd like the edit them as conveniently as XYPlorer's tags (quickly add, edit, copy/paste). We use these properties in our Sharepoint views. Thoughts? Of course, it'd also be nice if there was a script of some sort that could copy the Xyplorer tags to the Office doc properties, but I'm not sure if that's doable or not.
