Hi,
Thanks for that detail jupe.
Yes my configuration file has, and had at that time the setting you mention
I update fairly regularly and thought I was up to date at the time, but today there is a new update and the behaviour HAS changed.
Yes I've refined my understanding of exactly what was going on.
Dragging and dropping from either pane on the right to the Tree did not "Auto-Expand", however doing this from the Tree to a parent folder, also within the tree was what was causing the problem and "Auto-Expanding", regardless of any setting I could find, and in all positions on the Line - ie on the Expansion Icon, the Folder Icon, The Folder Name and the Blank Space to the Right of the name.
In the most recent update this has changed and now it seems to be the same as for Dragging from either pane. So that's really much better.
However I think it could be improved even more if it was made more logical. If the Folder ONLY auto expanded if you hover over the Expansion Icon "+". (I know others have said this elsewhere) The only reason I can think of for Auto-Expansion to occur on Folder Icon and Name AS WELL is to make things easier for People using Smart Phones and Tablets with Touch Sensitive only Interfaces. I'm not using one LET ME TURN IT OFF!
And seriously speaking Managing lots of files and folders is something which would be better done by hooking the Touch Sensitive only device up to a serious desktop...
I think this is a matter of the "Tail Wagging the Dog".
Yes I know that Auto-Expansion can be useful.
But having to "aim" while dragging and dropping on the Blank part of the File's Line makes for errors. I'd prefer to have the Folder Highlighted and drop where the highlight is, not on indefinite Blank Space!
It it logical that if you drop something in a folder that you've FOUND where you wanted to drop it. You're not searching any more! So the Auto-Expansion AFTER the Files or Folders have been dropped serves no useful function but to annoy and create more work and clicks, to re-close them.
If I want a situation where I can see where I'm dropping and the contents I will set up the Second Pane to hold that Folder and drag and drop from pane to pane instead.
So I think it should always be a feature that can be definitively TURNED OFF!
But most definitely should ONLY happen on the Expansion Icon, not on the Folder icon or name.
Well that's my opinion anyway...
Sorry for the rant. But having hated Windows Explorer so much over the years and having found an Explorer that is SO MUCH BETTER, it's truly awful seeing the horrible behaviour of Windows Explorer Copied...
Regards Greg
