How to backup all XYplorer resources?

Post by zBernie »

I noticed if I export my settings file, I don't get things like scripts added to custom buttons, and I'm not sure what else. Is there an easy way to backup all XYplorer resources? I'm guessing everything in Windows 10 is under me\AppData\Roaming\XYplorer?

There is this menu option:

File | Settings Special | Backup Application Data Folder...

Oh! That's easy! I just tried it and it backs up a LOT of files. How do you restore these files to say a new deployment of XYplorer on another PC?

-Thanks

For portable installs, the easiest way is to just copy the Data folder into the sub directory of XYplorer.exe. In installed versions it should be in the location you already mentioned by default.

I guess those are cached thumbnails? Other than that there are not that many files in an XY configuration unless you actively add them.

I don't seem to be getting everything when I restore a backup to another computer. I have a custom button, with a custom icon, which I know at minimum is not being backed up. So what I did was as you said File | Setting special | Backup application data folder.

Then on my other PC I copied all the backup files to me\AppData\Roaming\XYplorer, then exited XYplorer WITHOUT saving. But when I restart XYplorer this custom button is not the same as the original PC. Am I doing something wrong?

Does the Data folder exist hereon PC #2 ?:

me\AppData\Roaming\XYplorer\Data

The files don't go in the root of me\AppData\Roaming\XYplorer they need to be in that Data subfolder, and is it definitely an installed version on the other PC?

edit: press F9 in XYplorer on the other PC and in the titlebar it will tell you the path to the file you want to overwrite, and the path you need to copy the backup files into.

edit2: When you say you exit XY without saving, when you use that backup menu option it backs up the most recent save, so if you only just created a custom button, used the backup menu item the custom button won't be included in the backup, you would have needed to save settings first then used the backup option.

I don't have a Data directory under me\AppData\Roaming\XYplorer on my PC, or when I do a "Backup Application Data Folder". But I was able to successfully backup and restore my settings from one PC to another. The problem was as you suggested, I was not saving the settings after making the changes to XYplorer. I noticed that under File | Settings Special, some menu items had asterisks next to them. Once I saved them, then backed up the application, then restored the files to the other PC, everything was there. I just copied all the backed up files to the me\AppData\Roaming\XYplorer directory on the other PC. This is version 18.90.0100.

Thanks for your help with this!

Oops, sorry I have never actually used the installed version, it is obviously different, I should have known, usually there is a Data sub folder when using portable versions, glad you got it going though.
